Dylan Lawlor Returns to Boost Cardiff City Ahead of Charlton Clash

Cardiff City’s search for a first Championship win of the season has been handed a timely lift with the return of Wales defender Dylan Lawlor for Saturday’s home clash with Charlton Athletic.

The 20-year-old has yet to feature in 2026-27 after a knee injury halted his momentum, but he is back in contention for the lunchtime kick-off (12:30 BST) and, crucially, back fully fit.

“Dylan will definitely be available, he’s good to go,” confirmed head coach Brian Barry-Murphy, who has watched his side draw four and lose three of their opening seven league games.

Lawlor rejoined full training this week alongside fellow centre-back Will Fish. The difference is that only one of them will be involved. Fish, recovering from hernia surgery, will not be rushed.

“Will Fish won’t be available, he’s probably another week behind so we’re not going to take any chances, but Dylan’s back fully fit,” Barry-Murphy said.

Lawlor’s lay-off came at a cruel time. He made 43 appearances for club and country in 2025-26, emerging as a key figure under Barry-Murphy during Cardiff’s League One campaign, only to miss out on Wales’ Nations League squad on Tuesday because of the same knee issue that has kept him out of the new season.

Now he is back in the frame, the only question is how big a role he plays against Charlton.

“He’s trained really well. We’ll see how he is today and tomorrow, then make a decision based on who we feel is best to start this game,” Barry-Murphy explained. “But he’s fully fit, with no issues with his knee whatsoever, and he looks great.”

For Cardiff, his return is about more than one name on a teamsheet. It is about restoring balance to a back line that has been patched together for weeks.

Defensive reshuffle under strain

Injuries have forced Barry-Murphy into constant defensive reshuffles. The club moved to bring in Krystian Bielik from West Bromwich Albion, and full-backs Perry Ng and Joel Bagan have been asked to operate as makeshift centre-backs in recent matches.

Gabriel Osho has also missed games with his own injury problems, stripping Cardiff of natural options in the heart of defence and exposing the lack of depth in the squad.

That is why the sight of Lawlor and Fish back on the training pitch has felt so significant.

“They’re two such outstanding players and to give us that extra depth to our squad that we’ve lacked in the earliest parts of the season is going to be really important,” Barry-Murphy said. “I’m very pleased to get them back and will try to build them up gradually to make sure that they stay fit, and both players can be very important for us.”

The gradual build-up is key. Cardiff cannot afford another long spell without either centre-back, not with the season still trying to find its shape and a first win stubbornly out of reach.

Injuries still bite further up the pitch

The good news at the back is tempered by absences elsewhere. Wales internationals Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies remain sidelined, while defender Calum Chambers is also out.

Chambers is battling knee, neck and back problems. Colwill and Davies, though, are edging closer, working their way back from ankle and hamstring injuries respectively.

“We expect them to train in the middle of the international break, Rubin and Isaak,” said Barry-Murphy. “Calum Chambers is having a further scan on his injury this afternoon, so we’ll know more on the timescale.”

So Cardiff go into Saturday still short-handed, still waiting on key attackers and an experienced defender. But for a team stuck in a run of draws and narrow defeats, the return of a first-choice centre-back who has already proved he can handle the step up feels significant.

The question now is simple: can Dylan Lawlor’s comeback help turn a stuttering start into a season that finally begins to move?
