"We can confirm there was a breach of competition rules in the Crystal Palace versus Everton match. Crystal Palace used a fourth substitution opportunity during a fourth stoppage in play, when the rules permit a maximum of three substitution opportunities per match. We will now conduct an investigation alongside both clubs and Pro Ref and update in due course."

The league doesn’t have a fixed penalty for this violation, but the matter is expected to go before an independent tribunal. Sanctions may range widely, including warnings, fines, points deductions, or ordering a replay of the match. A replay would erase Palace’s initial 1-0 victory and require both teams to meet again.

The refereeing team, led by whistleblower Megan Wilson, failed to enforce the substitution rules properly. As a result, the entire officiating crew has been suspended from upcoming WSL games.
