Crystal Palace Prepares for Europa League Debut with Key Players Returning

Crystal Palace will step into Europe for the first time on Thursday night with two familiar faces potentially back in the frame.

Pierre Sage confirmed that Ismaila Sarr and Eddie Nketiah are in contention for a place in the matchday squad as the Eagles host Polish champions Lech Poznan in their UEFA Europa League league-phase opener at Selhurst Park.

Sarr, last season’s top scorer, has not played a competitive minute this campaign after injury halted his momentum. Palace have had to navigate the early weeks of the season without his pace and direct threat, but his return to full training has arrived at just the right moment.

Nketiah, who led the line in the first three fixtures of the season, has also been absent from recent home games. His possible inclusion adds another attacking option on a night when Palace will want goals, not just history.

Injury Updates

Speaking ahead of the club’s first-ever Europa League tie, Sage struck an upbeat tone about the pair’s progress after they came through training this week.

“He could be in the team tomorrow, as [could] Eddie Nketiah, because they started to train with us this week, and they are in shape,” Sage said when asked specifically about Sarr.

The news injects fresh energy into a squad still dealing with important absences. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson and forward Jean-Philippe Mateta remain sidelined, with Sage targeting their return after the upcoming international break.

Even so, Henderson’s name still dominated part of the build-up. Just before Sage faced the media, Palace announced that their captain had signed a new long-term contract, tying him to the club until 2030. It was a timely off-field statement on the eve of a landmark European night.

“We are really happy for us, we are really happy for him – it's a long-term contract for our captain,” Sage said, underlining Henderson’s influence in the dressing room and on the pitch.

So Palace head into their continental debut with the promise of attacking reinforcements and the security of their captain’s future settled. Lech Poznan arrive as champions of Poland; Selhurst Park will supply the noise.

Now Sage needs Sarr, Nketiah and the rest of his side to supply the cutting edge that turns a historic occasion into a winning one.
