Cole Palmer and Manchester United Duo Likely to Withdraw from England Squad Amid Injury Concerns
Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer is likely to withdraw from the upcoming England squad, prioritizing his long-term fitness over international appearances. Despite Thomas Tuchel recently urging Palmer to prove his worth after being left out of the World Cup squad, the 24-year-old seems set to manage his workload carefully.
Palmer played the entire match in Chelsea's 3-0 defeat to Brentford but will now miss the international break for physical preservation. This decision comes alongside injury and management concerns affecting other players.
Manchester United Stars Also Doubtful
Alongside Palmer, Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are also expected to be absent from England's Nations League fixtures. Rashford continues to manage a persistent hip issue that forced his substitution late in their 1-1 draw with Fulham. Meanwhile, Mainoo, who was part of the World Cup squad but did not play, is coping with an injury after playing 80 minutes at Craven Cottage.
Tuchel's Expectations Versus Player Fitness
Tuchel has emphasized that Palmer must justify his recall by delivering strong performances. The manager pointed out that Palmer’s recent form—four goals and two assists in seven matches—earned him his spot. Tuchel said, "It is one thing to be nominated, like with Cole, and getting your ticket back in the squad but it is another thing to perform for England. Cole needs to step up when he comes and show these kinds of numbers to keep his place." He added that both Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold have opportunities to prove themselves during this international window.
Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso supported Palmer’s cautious approach, noting the importance of learning from injury setbacks. Alonso remarked, "Sometimes you need to go through a difficult moment with an injury to learn from that. Cole has worked hard to prevent recurring symptoms."
Fitness Challenges After a Difficult Season
Palmer’s choice to sit out reflects a tough 2025-26 season disrupted by thigh and hamstring problems. Although he made 34 appearances across all competitions, scoring 11 goals and providing three assists, maintaining full fitness was a challenge. His recent resurgence under Alonso has been promising, but skipping international duty shows a focus on longevity.
With just two goals in 14 England appearances, Palmer will need to wait longer before becoming a regular starter under Tuchel.
England Faces Tough Nations League Schedule Without Key Players
The absence of Palmer, Rashford, and Mainoo leaves England with a challenging run of four Nations League games within three weeks. The schedule includes:
- September 26: England vs. Spain at Wembley
- September 29: Away to Czech Republic in Prague
- October 3: Away to Croatia
- October 6: England vs. Czech Republic at Wembley
Tuchel faces a testing period as he looks for alternatives to secure positive results in this demanding stretch.
