Cole Palmer's England Return Cut Short Due to Injury

Cole Palmer’s England return has been cut short before it even began.

The Chelsea forward is set to pull out of Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures after picking up a minor injury, halting what was shaping up to be a significant international comeback.

Recall halted before a ball is kicked

Palmer, 24, had only just been brought back into the England fold by Tuchel after being controversially overlooked for the World Cup. That omission stung. Tuchel made it clear the recall came with conditions, insisting the attacker had a “point to prove” and needed “to step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination”.

The stage looked perfect. Four games, an extended camp, and a chance to re-establish himself in a squad that went to a major tournament without him.

Now he will watch it all from the sidelines.

Brutal timing after heavy Chelsea defeat

The withdrawal follows Palmer’s 90-minute outing in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday. He completed the full match, another heavy shift in a season where his workload has climbed quickly.

After a summer off, enforced by that World Cup snub, Palmer has been central to Chelsea’s start. He has begun six of their seven matches, going the distance in five of them. The return has been sharp: four goals, two assists, and a clear sense that he had responded to the challenge laid down by Tuchel at club and country level.

The momentum, though, has hit a bump.

Nations League window England must now navigate without him

England’s schedule over the break is unforgiving. The Three Lions open against World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on 26 September, then head to the Czech Republic on 29 September and Croatia on 3 October, before returning home to host the Czechs again on 6 October.

It was a run tailor-made for attackers in form. Instead, Tuchel will be forced to reshuffle, losing a player whose creativity and productivity had put him back in the international conversation with force.

Old injury, new questions

Palmer’s fitness has been a talking point before. During the 2025-26 season he was repeatedly troubled by a groin issue, a problem that frustrated then-Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. Maresca, now in charge at Manchester City, publicly questioned the nature of the setback, saying it did not make sense.

That history hangs over this latest setback. Even with the current problem described as minor, any recurrence around the groin area will sharpen the medical focus at both club and country.

An international story still on pause

Palmer’s last appearance for England came in March, a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan. Since then, his form at Chelsea has built the case for a more permanent role with the national team.

The door had finally opened again. Now it stays ajar, not wide, not shut, just waiting for the next window — and for Palmer’s body to let his talent take centre stage.
