Chelsea Training Absentees: Pedro, Reece James, and Caicedo Updates
Pedro, Reece James and Moises Caicedo were all absent from the main section of Chelsea training on Tuesday, raising fresh questions over Alonso’s options ahead of Friday night.
Sky Sports reporter James Savundra noted that Pedro was nowhere to be seen during the open part of the session. That alone will jolt Chelsea supporters. The Brazilian has been their standout attacker so far this season: three goals, three assists, just five appearances. He dragged them out of trouble again at the weekend, snatching a late equaliser against Hull City to salvage a point.
To lose that form, even temporarily, would sting.
James’ absence cuts just as deep. The club captain has become a central pillar in Alonso’s reshaped midfield, completing the full 90 minutes in three of Chelsea’s four league games. He finished the draw at Hull looking comfortable, no obvious issue, no sign of a knock. So when he did not emerge with the main group on Tuesday, it felt less like routine rotation and more like an unwelcome mystery.
Caicedo, at least, is a known problem.
Caicedo caution continues
Alonso had already flagged the Ecuadorian’s situation before the Hull match. Caicedo has yet to start a game this season, his campaign chopped up by a stubborn physical issue that refuses to clear.
He missed the opening weekend against Fulham, then briefly reappeared with a 14‑minute cameo in that wild 4-3 win over Brighton. The comeback was short-lived. The same problem flared up again, ruling him out of subsequent clashes with Arsenal and Leeds and forcing the medical staff back to square one.
Asked last week about the chances of Caicedo featuring this Friday, Alonso drew a clear line. “Not yet, we’ll see for Brentford,” he said in his pre-match briefing, making it plain he would not be hurried. He underlined the stance again, stressing Chelsea are “not at a moment to take risks with him. Not yet; we are not yet.”
The message was simple: no shortcuts, no gambles.
A sliver of good news
Amid the concern, there was at least one encouraging sight at Cobham. Summer signings Marco Palestra and Jordan Henderson both trained fully with the squad, stepping closer to long-awaited debuts in blue.
For Alonso, that matters. If Pedro and James do not make it, and if Caicedo remains sidelined, those fresh legs could quickly become more than just depth pieces. They might be thrown straight into the heart of a season that is already testing Chelsea’s squad, and their manager’s nerve.
