Chelsea Enters New Era Under Clearlake Capital Control
Chelsea have stepped into a new era – and this time there is no doubt about who is in charge.
Clearlake Capital now holds full control of the club after Todd Boehly and Mark Walter sold their 12.83% stakes, folding their shares into the private equity giant’s already commanding position. Clearlake’s previous 61.5% majority has been turned into outright dominance, with power now firmly concentrated in the hands of Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano.
A clear power line at Stamford Bridge
Speaking before Chelsea’s trip to Brentford on Friday, manager Xabi Alonso did not try to play down the significance.
“I think it is an important day for the club when there is an important change in the structure of the club, new ownership,” he said in Thursday’s press conference, framing the moment as a line in the sand for the modern Chelsea.
The Boehly era has been chaotic, expensive and relentlessly scrutinised since that £2.5 billion takeover in 2022. Yet Alonso, who arrived after the dust of those first years had started to settle, chose respect over criticism.
He pointed to the difficulty of steering the club through the fallout from sanctions on former owner Roman Abramovich, acknowledging the scale of the task the outgoing investors had faced, even if he had not lived it from the inside.
“Thanks to the former owners for what they have done. I was not here but I know that they played an important role,” Alonso said. “And now that Behdad is taking more control, or almost full control, I think it is good that the main one is clear.”
One figure. One direction. That is the message from the dugout.
Alonso and Eghbali: a direct line
The optimism does not come from a boardroom memo. It comes from a personal bond.
Alonso made it clear that Eghbali has been central to his Chelsea story from the very start. The Clearlake co-founder flew to Madrid to sell him the club’s long-term vision, a move that left a lasting impression on the Spaniard.
“I have a very good relationship with Behdad; he was the one who came to Madrid to explain the project to convince me and we are working well together,” Alonso explained.
For Alonso, this is only the beginning.
“As I have mentioned, this is phase one we have completed in project of the squad. It is good and now we move on together,” he added, hinting at a broader rebuild still to come under the clarified hierarchy.
The message is clear: the ownership structure has changed, but the project remains – and now, in his eyes, it has a sharper edge.
Joao Pedro concern lingers before Brentford
While the ownership headlines dominated, there was another issue lurking in the background: Joao Pedro’s fitness.
The Brazilian has been central to Alonso’s fast start in his debut Premier League campaign, with three goals and three assists in Chelsea’s first four league matches. His form has given Chelsea’s attack a cutting edge that had often been missing in recent seasons.
Then came the scare. Joao Pedro withdrew from the Brazil national squad with an injury concern, raising doubts over whether he would be ready for Brentford.
Alonso refused to give anything away.
“In terms of injuries and in terms of the squad, we are having the last training session tomorrow so no one is ruled out for us for Friday,” he said. “So I prefer to be cautious and we will be waiting until tomorrow to make the final decision on every player.”
The ownership saga might be settled. The team sheet for Friday is not.
