Chelsea Faces Luton Without Caicedo and Palestra

Chelsea will have to navigate their Carabao Cup second-round clash with Luton Town without two of their headline midfield options, after Xabi Alonso confirmed Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra are not ready to return.

Both players missed the opening Premier League win over Fulham, a chaotic 3-2 victory that already hinted at the high-wire act this new Chelsea side might become. They will sit out again on Thursday.

“Not for tomorrow, both won’t make it [against Luton],” Alonso said in his pre-match press conference, drawing a firm line under any late fitness hopes.

There is, though, a sliver of encouragement over Caicedo. Alonso admitted the club are already eyeing the weekend for a possible comeback.

“Let’s see, hopefully Moi could make it for the weekend,” he added, before sounding more cautious on Palestra. “We need to check a little bit more with Marco.”

The rest of the squad emerges in far better shape. Those involved on Monday have been cleared, with Alonso confirming that Cole Palmer is “absolutely fine” after the Fulham win. The creative fulcrum is expected to be available as Chelsea juggle early-season minutes and intensity.

There was also a nod to opportunity. Young defender Penders has been drafted into the squad for the Luton tie and will travel with the group, a clear indication he could see game time under the lights.

“Penders is part of the squad, so he has an opportunity,” Alonso said, opening the door for another academy product to test himself in senior competition.

Caicedo and Palestra will watch from the sidelines. The Cup, though, will not wait. Chelsea’s reshaped midfield has to prove it can cope without them.
