Chelsea Set to Face Leeds Without Caicedo in Carabao Cup Clash
Chelsea head into Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup clash with Leeds United without Moises Caicedo once again. No smokescreens, no late tests. He is out, and Xabi Alonso has drawn a clear line: there will be no gamble.
Caicedo missed the first two games of the season, then lasted just 14 minutes against Brighton before going off in obvious discomfort. He sat out the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal and will not be rushed now. Chelsea have already been burned once, and Alonso has spoken openly about avoiding “the same mistake”.
The club take some comfort from the diagnosis. This is not viewed as a “longer-term” problem. But that does nothing for them against Leeds. Caicedo will watch from the stands, and he will not be alone.
Marco Palestra is also sidelined. Jordan Henderson continues to nurse the wrist injury he picked up at the World Cup, and Emmanuel Emegha misses out as well. For a squad that looked deep on paper in August, the absentees are starting to bite.
Alonso Draws a Hard Line on Fitness
Alonso has been blunt about Palestra’s situation. Chelsea rate him highly, but the medical call is non-negotiable.
“He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the Premier League,” Alonso said. “He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”
The message is obvious. Chelsea want Palestra involved, but not at any cost. Early-season injuries are maddening, particularly for a new arrival desperate to make an impression, yet the club’s priorities are clear. This is a Carabao Cup tie, not a title decider.
The calendar underlines that thinking. Hull City at Stamford Bridge in the league on Saturday carries more weight, and Alonso knows it. Leeds matters, but the Premier League shapes the season.
Rotation on the Cards at Stamford Bridge
With that in mind, changes are coming.
Levi Colwill, who missed the Arsenal defeat with a minor fitness concern, is available again and in line to return. Mike Penders could be handed the gloves, a chance to stake a claim in a competition where managers often shuffle their keepers.
At full-back and in the wide defensive roles, Pep Chavarria and Valentin Barco are both pushing to come in, fresh legs for a midweek cup tie under the lights.
A likely Chelsea XI reads: Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Neto; Barco, Lavia, Chavarria; Rogers, Palmer, Welbeck.
It is a team that mixes rotation with responsibility. Young energy, fringe players with a point to prove, and enough established quality to treat the competition with respect.
Clear Injury Picture, Clear Intent
The medical bulletin is short and sharp.
- Out: Caicedo, Palestra, Henderson, Emegha.
- Doubts: none.
Kick-off against Leeds comes at 8pm BST on Wednesday, September 9, at Stamford Bridge. The plan is uncomplicated. Caicedo will not be risked, Alonso will rotate where he can, and Chelsea will try to punch their ticket to the next round without losing sight of the league battle waiting at the weekend.
How long they can keep walking that tightrope between caution and ambition may define their season.
