Chelsea Injury Updates Ahead of Premier League Clash with Hull City

Chelsea will head into Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Hull City still short-handed, with Xabi Alonso confirming that four players remain unavailable.

The Blues arrive at the game on the back of a much-needed lift. After being outplayed in a derby defeat by Arsenal last weekend, they clawed their way past Leeds United in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday, coming from behind with help from key men Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers despite heavy rotation.

That midweek escape only underlined how stretched Alonso’s squad is. The schedule is piling up before the September international break, yet the hoped-for reinforcements from the treatment room will not arrive in time for Hull.

Caicedo ruled out again

The biggest absence remains Moises Caicedo. Asked on Friday if his star midfielder would be ready for the weekend, Alonso was blunt.

“Not yet,” he said. “Let’s see for Brentford, but unluckily not at the moment to take risks with him. Not yet, we are not there yet.”

Caicedo picked up an injury before the season even started. He finally appeared in late August, coming off the bench in Chelsea’s wild 4-3 home win over Brighton & Hove Albion, only to suffer a setback that forced him off again. Since then, the wait for a sustained run in the side has dragged on.

Chelsea must once more navigate a Premier League fixture without the Ecuador international at the heart of their midfield, a recurring theme in the opening weeks of the campaign.

New signings still on hold

The frustration does not stop there. Alonso confirmed that none of Marco Palestra, Jordan Henderson, or Emmanuel Emegha will feature against Hull either.

No,” he replied when asked if the trio could be involved on Saturday. Pressed specifically on Henderson and Emegha, he added: “Not tomorrow. We hope they can be (available) for Brentford, and we will see.”

All three are still waiting for their official Chelsea debuts.

Palestra, like Caicedo, was injured just before the season kicked off. He has recently started individual training, a sign he is edging closer to a return, but not quickly enough for this weekend.

Henderson has rejoined full training after suffering a left forearm fracture during the 2026 World Cup. Medical staff have not yet cleared him to play, even if his workload with the group has increased. Emegha, too, remains sidelined as the club takes a cautious approach.

International break shapes Chelsea’s plan

Chelsea have only two matches left before the extended September international break: Hull this weekend and Brentford to follow. National teams will cram four fixtures into a three-week window, with two international breaks merged into one and no further pause in October.

That calendar is driving Chelsea’s thinking. Rather than gamble on rushed comebacks, the club appear ready to ring-fence this quartet’s return for after the break, unless progress over the next week forces a rethink.

If anyone does make it back ahead of schedule, Palestra and Henderson look the likeliest candidates given their current training status.

For now, though, Alonso must squeeze another performance out of a squad already pushed hard by injuries and a demanding run of games. Hull arrive next, then Brentford. By the time the league resumes after that long international window, Chelsea will expect those missing names not just back on the teamsheet, but ready to change the rhythm of their season.
