Chelsea Faces Injury Challenges Ahead of Carabao Cup Tie
Chelsea will be without Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra for their Carabao Cup tie against Luton Town on Wednesday, Xabi Alonso has confirmed.
The midfield pair have both been ruled out, stripping Chelsea of energy and control in the middle of the pitch for a game that already carries early-season jeopardy.
“Both not for tomorrow,” Alonso said, drawing a clear line under any late fitness hopes.
Caicedo’s issue is not expected to be long term, and there is optimism he could return in time for the weekend’s league fixture. Palestra’s situation is less clear, with the club set to run further checks before putting any timeline on his comeback.
“Hopefully Moi can make it for the weekend. Maybe we need to check a little bit more with Marco,” Alonso explained.
While injuries bite, the noise around Enzo Fernandez refuses to fade. Manchester City are expected to move for the Argentina international before the window shuts, but Alonso insists the midfielder remains firmly in his plans for now.
“Yes, so we expect that he's involved, he's trained, he's training really well, he's a good professional and he will be involved,” the Chelsea head coach said, underlining Fernandez’s role despite the speculation swirling around him.
Asked directly if he wants Fernandez to stay at Stamford Bridge, Alonso did not hesitate.
“We want to have the best team possible. We know his qualities, he has shown it and we have to wait, but we will think about tomorrow and let's see how things develop.”
Chelsea head into the Luton tie juggling injuries, transfer intrigue and the demands of a domestic cup campaign. How they manage that balance over the next few days could shape far more than just a midweek team sheet.
