Casper de Norre Injury Concerns After Millwall's Defeat

Alex Neil fears the worst for midfielder Casper de Norre after the Millwall man limped out of their 3-0 defeat at Wrexham – and admits the injury could hardly have come at a worse time.

De Norre, 29, was forced off just before half-time in Wednesday night’s Championship fixture with Millwall leading 1-0. By full-time, that advantage had disappeared in brutal fashion.

“The big turning point was when we lost Casper,” Neil told BBC Radio London, cutting straight to the moment he felt the game slipped away.

The nature of the problem has set alarm bells ringing.

“It’s not good. Senior players know their bodies and he’s definitely felt a pop of some kind,” Neil said, with the kind of blunt honesty that usually hints at a significant lay-off.

From there, Millwall’s night unravelled. De Norre’s withdrawal triggered a chain reaction Neil could barely control.

Derek Mazou-Sacko, still short of full fitness, was not meant to play more than 20 minutes. That forced Neil to turn first to Camiel Neghli, then introduce Mazou-Sacko later than planned as he tried to patch together a midfield on the fly.

The strain told on the younger players. Daniel Kelly and Jenson Metcalfe began to cramp. Josh Coburn was hampered by a heel problem. Millwall’s structure, already fragile, started to bend.

“We ended up having to make wholesale changes, and the difficulty you’ve got with that is that the understanding throughout the players on the pitch is diluted,” Neil explained.

Up against a seasoned Wrexham side, that lack of cohesion proved costly. The home team punished every lapse, turning a deficit into a commanding win while Millwall’s legs and organisation faded.

“When you come up against an experienced team like Wrexham, it makes it a difficult task,” Neil said. “It’s frustrating because we’re probably down to our last third of the squad in terms of trying to get a team on the pitch and trying to be competitive at the level.”

The injury list has left Millwall stretched to breaking point, and Neil did not hide his exasperation at having to dig so deep into his resources this early in the campaign.

There is, at least, a sliver of relief on the horizon.

Neil is hopeful of having Tairyk Arconte and Kyrell Lisbie back in contention for Saturday’s game against Bolton, while Romain Esse could also feature after rejoining the club from Crystal Palace.

“We’ll see where he is, if he’s available and ready,” Neil said of Esse. “I don’t think he’s done loads over the pre-season so we need to be careful.”

Careful or not, with de Norre now a major concern and the squad already stretched, Millwall may have little choice but to lean on returning faces as they try to steady themselves before Bolton arrive.
