Calvert-Lewin Dominates as Leeds United Crush Newcastle 4-1

Dominic Calvert-Lewin tormented Newcastle United yet again as Leeds United stormed to a 4-1 win at a raucous Elland Road, a result that launches them up to third in the Premier League and leaves the visitors nursing bruised egos and battered ratings.

  His teasing cross sparked Leeds’ second goal and underlined his growing importance in this system. Defended with assurance, attacked with purpose. A full-back who looks completely in tune with the manager’s demands.
• Nico Elvedi – 7
  Only his second Premier League start, yet he already looks settled at Elland Road. Rarely flustered at the back, read the game well. Should have capped it with a goal but volleyed badly wide when unmarked at the far post.
• Tarik Muharemovic – 7
  August’s player of the month showed exactly why. Composed, authoritative, and rarely hurried. Made what could have been a tricky night look routine.
• Jayden Bogle – 8
  A constant menace. His second goal was more ricochet than rocket, but he earned his luck after twice forcing Lukas Hornicek into sharp stops. Fresh from scoring at Brighton, he played like a man who expects to influence games in the final third. Newcastle never really worked him out.
• Anton Stach – 7
  Set the tone inside the first minute, winning a corner after just 32 seconds and immediately pinning Newcastle back. Drove Leeds on from midfield, even if he’ll be frustrated at passing up a good chance to score.
• Ethan Ampadu – 7
  The organiser and enforcer. Barked instructions, kept Leeds’ tempo high and their shape tight. Even saw a fierce, goalbound strike blocked by his own striker, Calvert-Lewin, such was Leeds’ eagerness to shoot.
• Ao Tanaka – 7
  His opener took two hefty deflections, but he deserved the reward for having the conviction to pull the trigger. Looked close to his best again, busy and brave on the ball. One slack pass could have proved costly, but Newcastle failed to punish it.
• Gabriel Gudmundsson – 7
  Played like an out-and-out winger from wing-back. Constantly drove at Newcastle down the left and stretched the game. His direct running pinned the visitors deep.
• Noah Okafor – 8
  Ice-cold and incisive. Showed composure to roll the ball back for Tanaka’s shot for the opener, then smashed in a fine fourth to kill any faint hope of a comeback. Sharp movement, sharp finishing.
• Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 9
  Newcastle’s nightmare. Again. His presence alone unhinged their back line. A trademark towering header led to Bogle being credited with Leeds’ second, then he showed finesse on the deck to slide home the third. That makes it eight goals against Newcastle – more than he has scored against any other club. He bullied Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman all night.

• Lukas Hornicek – 6
  Without him, this could have been brutal. Denied Bogle twice and stood up well to Calvert-Lewin on another occasion. Conceded four, yet still came out with credit.
• Amar Dedic – 4
  Passed fit after a hamstring scare but never looked comfortable. Leeds targeted his flank relentlessly and he struggled to stem the tide.
• Malick Thiaw – 3
  Given the armband for the night, but the performance didn’t match the responsibility. Outmuscled by Calvert-Lewin for the second goal, then left punching the turf as the striker beat him again for the third. Couldn’t shut down Okafor either. A chastening evening.
• Sven Botman – 3
  Overwhelmed. Calvert-Lewin ran him ragged and skinned him far too easily in the build-up to Leeds’ second. Never really recovered his composure.
• Lewis Hall – 4
  Dragged out of position for Leeds’ second as the defensive line crumbled around him. Fresh from signing a new deal, this was not the statement display he would have envisaged.
• Nico Gonzalez – 5
  His night ended after just 19 minutes when a blow to the head forced him off. Had little chance to influence proceedings.
• Lewis Miley – 4
  Helpless as Tanaka’s shot deflected in off him, and then swamped by Leeds’ intensity. Struggled to get on the ball and dictate play, rushed and harried into errors.
• Jacob Murphy – 3
  In for the injured Anthony Elanga but never looked like a solution. Offered minimal protection defensively and rarely troubled Leeds going forward.
• Yoane Wissa – 5
  At least tried to drag Newcastle up the pitch. Created their best opening and chased lost causes, though his final ball often let him down.
• Harvey Barnes – 5
  Has punished Leeds before and almost did so again when he danced into the box, only for Trafford to beat his effort away. Flashes of threat, no end product.
• Matias Fernandez-Pardo – 4
  A £51.4m full debut to forget. Starved of service as Newcastle repeatedly went long, he was left feeding off scraps and never got a proper foothold.

  Thrown into the fire early on at 18. Unlucky with the deflection on Tanaka’s goal, but his loose pass helped spark Leeds’ second. A harsh lesson at this level.

  Blistering pace and a rare positive for Newcastle. Took his goal well and at least injected some urgency. Has given his manager something to think about.
