Bruno Genesio's Tactical Dilemma for Le Classique

Bruno Genesio walks into Le Classique with a squad that offers more questions than options.

Olympique de Marseille arrive at Sunday night’s showdown with Paris Saint-Germain on a four-game losing streak in all competitions, stripped of confidence and, crucially, depth. With a thin bench and a team already close to its physical limit, the coach has little room to reshuffle without tearing up the structure that has at least held together in Ligue 1.

Two absences are non-negotiable. Geoffrey Kondogbia and Tochukwu Nnadi remain out, removing both muscle and rotation possibilities from the heart of midfield. That reality frames every tactical choice Genesio makes.

Harit through the middle, Gomes at risk

The one likely tweak sits in the playmaking zone. Angel Gomes, back at Marseille after his loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers, has struggled to catch fire. The England international has yet to find rhythm or influence, and his place looks the most vulnerable on the teamsheet.

The door opens for Amine Harit.

Harit, so often Marseille’s most inventive player when given central responsibility, is expected to be moved inside to operate as the main link between midfield and attack. That switch would push Keylian Abdallah into the right-sided attacking role Harit has recently occupied, giving OM a more direct threat out wide and a more natural No. 10 profile in the middle.

It is not revolution. It is necessity.

A settled core, a fragile moment

Genesio has largely kept faith with a stable XI in the league, and that spine should remain intact against PSG. Jeffrey De Lange is set to continue in goal, protected by a back four of Emerson, Nayef Aguerd, CJ Egan-Riley and Timothy Weah. The full-backs will be asked to walk a tightrope: brave enough to support attacks, disciplined enough not to leave oceans of space for PSG to exploit.

In midfield, Himad Abdelli and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are expected to form the double pivot. Abdelli brings energy and vertical running; Hojbjerg offers structure, bite and a measure of control in front of the defence. Their ability to close spaces and win second balls will decide whether Marseille can stay in the game or get overrun early.

Ahead of them, the creative and attacking quartet should line up as Igor Paixao, Harit, Abdallah and Amine Gouiri. Paixao will look to drive at defenders and draw fouls, Abdallah to stretch the pitch on the right, while Gouiri carries the burden of turning half-chances into something more.
