Bruno Fernandes' Fitness Concern After Champions League Win
Bruno Fernandes limped away from Old Trafford with the job done but the warning signs flashing.
Manchester United’s captain has played every single minute of the club’s opening four games of the season, and he dragged them through another one on Wednesday night, scoring in a 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah FK. At 32, he remains the heartbeat of Michael Carrick’s side. He also looked like a player running close to the edge.
Post-match footage of Fernandes hobbling heavily alongside medical staff as he left the stadium spread quickly. The images underlined what the numbers already say: United are leaning hard on their captain.
Carrick’s gamble with his captain
Carrick didn’t hide from it. He had gone into the Sabah tie planning to rotate, to give legs a rest and spread the load. The game refused to cooperate.
The manager admitted the flow of the contest meant Fernandes stayed on until the final whistle while others were withdrawn. With only five substitutions available, Carrick argued his hand was forced.
“We only had five subs! We had to make certain decisions on what that looked like,” he said, pointing to the tactical needs of the second half as he explained why his captain remained on the pitch. Fernandes, he stressed, is “like anybody else” and has “played an awful lot”, but Carrick insisted the wider squad is being built to absorb that burden over time.
The message to his captain was clear: the break is coming, just not on this night.
“Tonight was just one of those things, there were decisions to be made and he ended up staying on,” Carrick added. It sounded like a promise and an apology rolled into one.
Shaw concern clouds derby build-up
Fernandes’ fitness scare is only part of Carrick’s selection puzzle before Sunday’s derby against Manchester City.
Luke Shaw was nowhere to be seen in the squad against Sabah, his absence immediately raising alarms given City’s ruthlessness in the final third. United’s manager chose his words carefully when pressed on the left-back’s condition.
“We’ll have to see. We just kind of looked after him a little bit going into tonight,” Carrick said. “He wasn’t quite ready for it 100 per cent, so we didn’t risk it. We’ll see how he is over the next couple of days or so.”
If Shaw fails to make it, United lose a key piece of their defensive structure at precisely the wrong time. Carrick is trying to hold the line between stability and strain, knowing City will punish any weakness.
Rashford held back, Sesko pushed forward
There was at least one positive on the fitness front. Marcus Rashford, also missing in midweek, is not injured.
His omission was a calculated call, Carrick confirmed, designed to keep the forward fresh for the weekend and to share minutes around the squad.
“A little bit of that, yeah, and trying to share the load a little bit, to a point, as well,” he explained when asked if Rashford’s absence was precautionary.
That decision opened the door for Benjamin Sesko. The young forward took advantage of the rotation, banking valuable minutes as Carrick tries to accelerate his adaptation.
“We’ve got good options, so we’re trying to keep everyone fresh, but with a point where Ben can get good minutes tonight and get him up to speed,” the manager said.
United walked off with a 4-0 win, a clean sheet and a striker edging closer to full sharpness. They also walked off with their captain limping and their first-choice left-back still a doubt.
Carrick now has three days to prove that his early-season rotation plan can protect his stars without dulling United’s edge in the biggest game of their campaign so far.
