Brown Soccer Dominates but Settles for Draw Against Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – Brown had Rhode Island exactly where it wanted them. A goal up, dictating tempo, swarming the box. The stat sheet screamed dominance. The scoreboard did not.

The Bears walked out of the URI Soccer Complex on Thursday night with a 1-1 draw, a result that flatters the Rams far more than it does a Brown side that controlled almost everything but the final score.

Vargas Strikes Early

The pressure came early and hard.

With Brown pinning URI deep in its own half, senior forward Angelina Vargas broke the game open in the 12th minute. Junior defender Kyra Treanor burned her marker down the right flank and whipped a ball into the six-yard box. Vargas had timed her run perfectly. One touch, low and true, and the Bears were in front.

It was Vargas’ third goal of the season and the sixth of her career, a clean finish that reflected Brown’s fast start and attacking intent.

The Bears nearly buried the game before halftime. Vargas forced another save in the 14th minute. Senior forward Joy Okonye drove at goal and tested the keeper in the 25th. Senior Corine Gregory followed a minute later with another effort on frame, and sophomore Jael‑Marie Guy added a dangerous strike in the 33rd.

By the break, the numbers told the story of a one-sided half: 11-1 in shots, 7-1 in shots on goal, 5-2 in corners. Vargas led the way with four shots and three on target. Okonye added three efforts, two of them on goal. Brown’s front line kept Rhode Island under constant stress.

Rams Hit Back Against the Run of Play

The pattern didn’t change much after halftime. Brown continued to ask questions. URI clung on.

Then came the twist.

In the 68th minute, with the Bears seemingly in control, Rhode Island finally carved out a moment in the penalty area. The ball fell to Megan Steinbach, and she didn’t waste it, slotting home from inside the box to level the match at 1-1.

The goal jolted the Rams to life. In the 83rd minute, they came within inches of a winner, a driven effort crashing off the crossbar and briefly silencing the traveling Brown support.

Brown’s defense, anchored by an iron‑man back four, held firm. Treanor, senior Claire Silverman, junior Chesney Robinson, and junior Brooke Birtwistle each went the full 90 minutes, limiting Rhode Island to just three shots all night and only two on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Addison Etter was called into action just once, making a single save in the draw.

Dominance Without the Finish

Across the 90 minutes, Brown controlled virtually every measurable facet of the match. The Bears outshot the Rams 17-3, put 10 shots on frame to URI’s two, and racked up a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.

Okonye led all players with six shots and four on goal, constantly driving at the Rams’ back line. Vargas finished with four shots and three on target, while Guy also fired four times, twice forcing saves.

Even in the closing stages, Brown kept pushing. The Bears earned corners in the 87th and 88th minutes, loading the box in search of a late winner. In the 90th minute, Guy unleashed one last shot on target, demanding a final save from the URI goalkeeper.

The breakthrough never came.

Unbeaten Run Rolls On

The draw extends Brown’s unbeaten streak to three matches (2-0-1) and keeps the Bears perfect in the state of Rhode Island this season at 4-0-1, including a 4-0-0 mark at home. The record moves to 4-2-1 overall, while Rhode Island sits at 2-3-3.

Next up, Brown heads to Hofstra on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1:00 p.m. for its final non-league road test of the season. With performances like this, the question isn’t whether the Bears can create chances.

It’s how long opponents can keep surviving them.
