Brian Fariñas and Frenkie de Jong's Impact on Barcelona's Future
Brian Fariñas arrived at pre-season as just another academy hopeful. He walks away from it as one of Hansi Flick’s biggest discoveries – and a player whose future is now tangled up with Frenkie de Jong’s injured knee.
Flick liked him enough to say no to Girona before a ball had even been kicked this summer. Barcelona had an agreement in place for the youngster to head out on loan, but the new coach wanted a closer look. That decision has changed the tone of Fariñas’ season before it has even started.
The 20-year-old responded exactly how a manager hopes a prospect will. He impressed in training, coped with the tempo, and quickly turned from “one to monitor” into a genuine first-team option in Flick’s eyes.
Barcelona have already made one big call: according to Mundo Deportivo, Fariñas will not be sent back to the reserves. That door is closed. From here, the choice is stark. Either he stays with Flick’s senior squad, or the club revives the Girona move that was parked at the start of the summer.
And that is where De Jong enters the story.
Flick finds a useful wildcard
Fariñas hasn’t just survived pre-season. He has offered Flick something coaches crave: options.
Used as a defensive midfielder, as a more orthodox central midfielder and in advanced areas, the youngster showed he can slide into different roles without losing clarity. Flick even pushed the experiment further, trying him at right-back against Birmingham. It was a test of his tactical understanding as much as his technique, and Fariñas passed it well enough for that versatility to be marked down as one of his biggest assets.
He has moved beyond the stage of simply “training with the first team”. Inside the coaching staff, there is now a feeling he can actually help in competitive matches.
That is a significant step. But it is not the same as being guaranteed minutes.
Convincing Flick is one battle. Finding regular playing time in a midfield as crowded and demanding as Barcelona’s is another entirely.
De Jong’s recovery will tip the balance
The next phase of Fariñas’ career does not rest solely on his own performances. It is tied to the medical report on Frenkie de Jong.
Barcelona are waiting for a clear update on the Dutchman, who is recovering from a rupture of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee suffered at the World Cup. De Jong opted for a conservative treatment plan, but surgery remains on the table if his progress stalls.
The club are watching that situation closely, and it could directly shape what happens to Fariñas.
If De Jong is ruled out for a longer spell, the logic is simple: Barcelona will need bodies and variety in midfield. With the option of sending Fariñas back to the reserves already discarded, keeping him around the first team becomes the most coherent solution. He can cover several roles, plug gaps, and grow in an elite environment.
If De Jong’s recovery accelerates and he returns sooner than expected, the equation changes. Minutes will be harder to come by. In that scenario, resurrecting the Girona loan would give Fariñas what Barcelona cannot guarantee right now – a steady run of top-flight football.
For the moment, the youngster finds himself in a strange limbo. He has done almost everything right: earned Flick’s trust, shown tactical flexibility, and climbed out of the reserve-team bracket. Yet his immediate future will not be decided by his form or by Girona’s interest alone.
It will be decided by how quickly one of Barcelona’s established stars can bend his knee without pain – and by how bold Flick wants to be with a midfielder who has just kicked down the door to the first team.
