Bayern Munich's Preseason Drama: Musiala's Scare and Injury Concerns

The noise inside the Allianz Arena died in an instant.

In the 84th minute, Jamal Musiala crumpled to the turf in the Leipzig half, and the mood flipped from summer friendly to sudden alarm. Bayern players sprinted towards him, waving frantically for help. Referee Robert Hartmann halted play, and the stadium watched as the emergency doctor rushed straight onto the pitch.

For a few long seconds, nobody moved.

Then came the first sign of relief. After a quick on-field examination, the doctor stepped back. Musiala, visibly shaken and unsteady, got to his feet and walked off under his own power. The tension eased, but it didn’t disappear.

Even after Bayern’s 3-1 win over Leipzig in the Telekom Cup, there was no clear diagnosis. “It will become clear what it was. But of course we are keeping our fingers crossed,” captain Manuel Neuer told MagentaTV. Leipzig’s Rocco Reitz was no wiser either; information was thin.

According to SID, Musiala suffered a spell of weakness, complaining of dizziness and circulatory problems. The afternoon had been punishingly hot, with temperatures soaring well beyond 30 degrees. Bayern’s board member for sport Max Eberl cut through the speculation: “The most important thing is that he is well.”

Musiala scores, then scares

The drama overshadowed what had been Musiala’s game moments earlier. Just before the incident, the 23-year-old had effectively killed the contest, making it 3-1 to Bayern after sharp approach play from new signing Ismael Saibari. It was a classic Musiala finish to cap a flowing move, and it looked like the perfect preseason outing for the playmaker.

He was not alone on the scoresheet among Bayern’s summer arrivals. Luis Diaz and Nathaniel Brown, both new recruits, grabbed the other goals for the German record champions. Between those strikes, Brajan Gruda had briefly pulled Leipzig level, giving the visitors from Saxony a foothold that didn’t last.

Bayern’s attacking rhythm pleased the home crowd. Their injury list did not.

Laimer and Kim add to Bayern worries

Musiala’s scare was only the latest in a worrying pattern for Bayern on the day.

Min-jae Kim had already left the field after a little over an hour, unable to continue because of thigh problems. His departure added a defensive concern to what was fast becoming a physically costly friendly.

Earlier still, Konrad Laimer had raised alarms. After a challenge with Leipzig full-back David Raum, the Austria international was clearly in trouble, clutching his right leg in the thigh or knee area. He tried to carry on but could not shake the pain.

“Konny took a knock pretty early, and his foot also swelled up pretty quickly. That’s why we took him off as a precaution,” Eberl explained. The images were not reassuring. “It had already got to the point where he could no longer walk and had to be supported. You could see that. He was not moving freely. I really can’t say today how long it will take.”

What should have been a routine test of form and fitness turned into a roll call of concerns.

Heat, knocks and a tight schedule

The oppressive heat, the intensity of the duels, and the proximity of competitive action all collided at the Allianz Arena. Bayern came away with a 3-1 win and encouraging debuts for several new signings, but the main questions now revolve around the treatment room.

There is little time to breathe. Bayern face their final friendly on Tuesday against 2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Heidenheim. Then comes the first real marker of the season: Borussia Dortmund in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup next Saturday.

The football looked sharp. The scoreboard looked good. But as Musiala, Laimer and Kim all left the pitch under varying degrees of distress, one issue loomed larger than the rest: how fit will Bayern be when the first trophy of the campaign is on the line?
