Bardghji Faces Second ACL Tear as Transfer Dreams Fade

Barcelona’s summer plans – and Roony Bardghji’s career trajectory – have been jolted by the worst kind of news. The club confirmed on Tuesday that the 20-year-old has torn the ACL in his right knee, a devastating injury that wipes out any chance of a move before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

The Sweden international went down in training on Monday. Initial fears were quickly confirmed by medical tests: another serious ligament rupture, surgery required in the coming days, and a long rehabilitation ahead. For a player who had spent the summer preparing for a fresh start away from Catalonia, the timing could hardly be more brutal.

Cruel twist after Flick talks

The blow comes just days after Hansi Flick sat Bardghji down and laid out his situation. According to ESPN, the Barcelona coach told the winger that first-team minutes would be extremely hard to find this season and that he should look for a new club.

On the back of that conversation, Barcelona moved to protect a potential transfer. Bardghji was left out of the squad for Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese specifically to avoid injury before a deal could be done. The irony is painful: he missed the games, stayed fit, and then suffered the tear in a routine training session instead.

Barcelona had already received enquiries from across Europe, including interest from the Premier League, and talks were expected to ramp up as the window entered its final stretch. All of that stops now. With surgery looming and months of recovery ahead, no club will move for him this summer.

Second major knee injury

This is not Bardghji’s first encounter with this nightmare. He tore the ACL in the same right knee while at Copenhagen in 2024, an injury that already raised questions about his long-term durability. To suffer the exact same setback again at 20 is a harsh test of both body and mentality.

Barcelona signed him last summer from Copenhagen for around €2 million, a low-cost bet on a high-upside talent. In his debut season in Spain he made 28 appearances in all competitions and scored two goals. Most of those minutes came from the bench, but they hinted at a player the club believed could grow into a bigger role.

That path had already narrowed. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi this summer pushed Bardghji further down the pecking order in the attacking positions, which is why a transfer had been actively pursued in recent weeks. The ACL tear slams that door shut.

Season lost, future on hold

With the window closing on September 1, Barcelona now expect Bardghji to stay put and focus solely on his recovery. Surgery is scheduled in the coming days, after which he will begin a lengthy rehabilitation programme at the club’s facilities.

Instead of a new league, a new country, and a fresh battle for minutes, his season will be spent in treatment rooms and gyms in Barcelona, trying to rebuild the same knee for a second time. For a 20-year-old who thought he was on the verge of a new chapter, the challenge has changed completely: not where he will play next, but how strongly he can come back.
