Barcelona's New Leadership: Raphinha and Pedri Take Charge

Barcelona have locked in a new era of leaders – and they’ve done it with a bold twist.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Hansi Flick has personally installed Raphinha as first captain and Pedri as his deputy for the 2026-27 season, putting two of his most trusted on-pitch lieutenants at the top of the hierarchy. The German coach handpicked the pair himself, setting the tone before a ball has even been kicked in earnest.

The rest of the armband order came from inside the dressing room. Eric Garcia, Frenkie de Jong and 19-year-old Yamal were voted in by their teammates to complete a five-man leadership group that looks very different to last season’s. It had to. The loan departures of Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ronald Araujo ripped out two pillars of authority and left a sizeable void.

Flick anticipated that gap early. As the squad was still being assembled and the Joan Gamper Trophy approached, he had already marked out his temporary leaders, with Raphinha and Pedri at the top. He then stepped back and let the group decide the remaining three spots, blending his own authority with a clear nod to the players’ voice.

Garcia’s elevation says plenty about what happens away from the cameras. He is not the loudest name in the squad, but his professionalism and daily standards have earned deep respect in the dressing room. De Jong’s promotion feels almost inevitable: with Ter Stegen gone, the Dutch midfielder becomes the senior figure in terms of age and first-team mileage, a natural reference point in tense moments.

Then comes the headline.

Yamal, at just 19, is now part of Barcelona’s official captaincy core. Already entrusted with the No.10 shirt, he steps into this group not because of years served, but because of the sheer weight of his influence on the pitch. His teammates feel it, the club recognises it, and Flick is building around it. For a teenager, that is not symbolic. It is a statement.

Barcelona have seen this kind of youthful authority before. Two seasons ago, Gavi took the armband from Pedri in a comeback win over Sevilla at 20 years and 76 days, becoming the club’s second-youngest captain in a competitive fixture. The youngest remains Bojan Krkic, who wore the armband in a Copa del Rey tie back in 2010 at 20 years and 56 days.

Yamal does not take that particular record – not yet. What he does claim is something arguably more significant: a formal, permanent place in the five-man leadership structure at 19. On paper, that cements him as the emotional and sporting centre of Flick’s project. On the grass, his authority has already been obvious.

Now comes the first real test for this new order.

With the captaincy puzzle solved, Barcelona head into a tricky La Liga trip to Valencia on Sunday, keen to protect a flawless domestic start. But Flick’s plans have been jolted. Yamal unexpectedly missed Saturday’s final training session, throwing his availability for Mestalla into serious doubt and stripping Barça of their most explosive attacking outlet.

The leadership group is in place. The question now is whether this newly appointed core can guide Barcelona through one of Spain’s most hostile away days without the teenager who already plays – and now leads – like the face of their future.
