Barcelona Launch Hansi Flick Era Against Elche

Barcelona open the Hansi Flick era on the road, and there’s no easing into it. A new season, a new coach, and a trip to Elche to launch their La Liga campaign. The squad list is out, and it tells its own story.

Flick’s first squad: a mix of trust and new blood

Hansi Flick has named 23 players for Sunday’s clash, his first official league game in charge of the Blaugrana.

The headline is clear: Rodri is in. The new signing receives his first call-up and is expected to make his debut in the second half, a carefully managed introduction rather than a full-throttle start. Flick is wasting no time integrating one of his key additions.

There’s another important name back on the list. Alejandro Balde returns to the squad after sitting out the weekend amid uncertainty over his future. The left-back’s presence gives Flick a natural outlet on the flank and a much-needed injection of pace and width.

At the same time, the squad hints at a changing of the guard. Marc Casadó, Álvaro Cortés and Héctor Fort are all left out as they move closer to exits from the club. Their omission underlines the transition phase Barcelona are stepping into under Flick.

Not all absences are tactical. Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji all miss out with knee injuries, stripping the midfield of power, control and creativity. Flick will have to build his opening-night structure without three major weapons.

How Barça could line up

The expected shape is familiar, the details less so. Flick is tipped to go with a 4-3-3:

That back four would be a statement of trust in youth and ball-playing defenders. Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín anchoring the centre, with Xavi Espart on the left and Eric Garcia on the right, would give Barcelona a technical base rather than a purely physical one.

In midfield, Marc Bernal and Fermín López are set to flank Pedri. Pedri remains the heartbeat, the reference point, while Bernal and Fermín bring energy and vertical running to compensate for the missing Gavi and De Jong.

Up front, it’s pure electricity. Lamine Yamal on one side, Raphinha on the other, Karim Adeyemi through the middle. Pace, one‑v‑one threat, and constant movement. If Flick wants to stretch Elche early and often, this trio does exactly that.

Kick-off is set for 9pm CET in Barcelona, 8pm BST/WAT in the UK and Nigeria, 3pm ET and 12pm PT in the USA, and 12.30am IST in India (Friday).
