Barcelona's Champions League Squad: Trusting Youth with Abdelkarim and Bisiu

Barcelona have locked in their 25-man squad for the Champions League league phase, and the list says plenty about both their present and their future.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the club have registered only players on first-team contracts in their UEFA List A, with two notable inclusions: Egyptian defender Hamza Abdelkarim and Belgian youngster Jesse Bisiu. Both step formally into the European spotlight, even if their day-to-day reality still sits closer to the reserve side.

Abdelkarim and Bisiu step up

Abdelkarim will wear 29 and Bisiu 27 in the Champions League, the same numbers they use in La Liga. On paper, nothing changes. On UEFA’s forms, everything does.

Because both are registered as reserve-team players in domestic competition, Barcelona could not simply slide them into List B. UEFA rules are strict: List B is reserved for homegrown players who have spent at least two consecutive years at the club’s academy, or three consecutive years including a loan of no more than one year within the same federation.

Abdelkarim and Bisiu do not meet those criteria. So Barcelona pushed them up a tier. They go into List A as first-teamers, occupying two of the 25 slots usually guarded fiercely by any club with European ambitions.

It is a clear show of trust. And a calculated risk.

Bardghji’s season wiped out

The flip side of that decision is written in the name that does not appear.

Roony Bardghji has been left out of the Champions League squad. The Swedish forward faces a season on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury, an issue severe enough to rule him out for the entire campaign.

His absence frees up room, but it also underlines the brutal timing of the setback. Bardghji already struggled for minutes last season, squeezed by the emergence of Lamine Yamal in his preferred role. Competing with one of the brightest talents in world football is hard enough. Doing it while coming off a long-term injury is another level entirely.

For Bardghji, the Champions League will pass by this year. For Barcelona, his omission opens a door for others.

Fariñas walks the line between lists

One of those is Brian Fariñas, though his route into Europe looks different.

The midfielder has been named on Barcelona’s academy list, UEFA’s List B, which the club can update up to 24 hours before each match. He will wear number 28 in the Champions League, grouped with the rest of the academy players eligible under the homegrown rules.

Curiously, that sits at odds with his domestic status. In La Liga, Fariñas already carries the heavyweight number 4 with the first team, a shirt that usually signals long-term importance. In Europe, the regulations cut through the symbolism. Because he meets the criteria for List B, Barcelona can keep him off the main 25-man List A and still call on him when needed.

It is a neat piece of squad management. Abdelkarim and Bisiu are pushed up to protect depth. Fariñas stays on the academy list to preserve flexibility.

The paperwork is dry. The implications are not. With a Champions League campaign ahead and a squad carefully sliced between Lists A and B, Barcelona have nailed their colours to the mast: trust in youth, protect the core, and see which of these emerging names can turn a registration line into a breakthrough season.
