Ballinora's Season Ends After Munster Council Appeal Rejected

Ballinora’s last bid to rescue their season has been shut down.

Their appeal to the Munster Council over the controversial awarding of their McCarthy Insurance Group PIFC Group 3 Round 3 tie to Fermoy was rejected on Monday night, confirming that the result — and Ballinora’s exit — will stand.

Appeal ends, Fermoy march on

The ruling upholds last Tuesday’s correction to the Glenville fixture, which was originally recorded as a 0-21 to 2-15 draw. After a review, that was amended to a 0-22 to 2-15 Fermoy win, pushing Fermoy into the quarter-finals and leaving Ballinora out of the knockout stages altogether.

The dispute centred on a scoring error in referee Wayne King’s report. Video footage later showed that a 30th‑minute point from Ben Twomey, followed quickly by a two‑point effort from the same player, had not been fully captured in the half-time score.

That adjustment nudged Fermoy’s interval tally from the stated 0-9 to the correct 0-10. One point on paper. All the difference in the table.

Ballinora had been 2-7 to 0-9 in front at the break and, when the original draw result was overturned, the club issued a strongly worded statement expressing “huge disappointment”. They argued that “the rules of fair play” had not been applied and vowed to “fully consider” their options.

That led to a direct approach to Fermoy seeking a replay. Fermoy declined, opting to stand by the post‑match awarding of the game.

The Munster Council appeal was Ballinora’s final shot. Monday night’s decision closed that door, confirming Fermoy’s progression to a quarter-final meeting with Rockchapel. The other last-eight tie will see Macroom take on Naomh Abán, with both fixtures scheduled for Sunday.

A bruising week for Ballinora

The setback caps a bruising spell for Ballinora. Their drive for a six‑in‑a‑row MJK Oils Muskerry JAHC title also ended at the group stage, beaten in a winner‑takes‑all clash by Grenagh on Sunday.

Two campaigns, both cut off before the knockout rounds. The margins were thin on the scoreboard — but brutally clear on the season’s path.
