Asencio Faces New Disciplinary Action at Real Madrid

Real Madrid defender Asencio has stepped out of one legal battle and straight into another storm of his own making.

Recently cleared of charges relating to the non-consensual distribution of an explicit video, the 23-year-old is now at the centre of fresh internal disciplinary proceedings at the Santiago Bernabeu after a separate incident off the pitch. This time, there is no ambiguity: Asencio has been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The offence carries weight. His driving licence has been suspended for eight months and he has been hit with a €14,400 fine. Real Madrid moved quickly once the conviction was confirmed, triggering their own formal disciplinary process.

José Mourinho has never been shy about drawing lines in the sand, and he did so again when asked about Asencio’s situation. The Portuguese coach made it clear that his patience with the defender’s off-field behaviour is wearing thin.

"A Real Madrid player is a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 12 months a year," Mourinho said on the club’s official website, his words carrying the weight of a warning as much as a reminder.

"Everything you do outside your professional area continues to reflect on Real Madrid, continues to affect the prestige of a club that is untouchable. I am not happy. Everyone makes mistakes, but accumulated mistakes are something different."

The message was blunt. One mistake can be forgiven. A pattern cannot.

Exemplary in Valdebebas, trouble outside it

Just as the criticism sharpened, Mourinho drew a clear distinction between Asencio the professional and Asencio the citizen.

"I spoke with him when I arrived," he revealed. "We talked about things from the past. Since I arrived, I haven’t spoken about situations outside Valdebebas because in Valdebebas, he is an exemplary professional.

"When he was well, no one trained more or better than him. Now that he has been injured for weeks, he is the first to arrive, the last to leave, showing extreme dedication to his recovery."

So on the training ground, the defender is setting the standard. Away from it, he is testing the limits of the club’s tolerance.

Injury, uncertainty and a career at a crossroads

Asencio has not played a single minute for Real Madrid this season. A persistent muscle problem has kept him out, and he remains locked into an intensive physical recovery programme while his team-mates fight on without him.

Now he must juggle two recoveries at once: his body and his reputation.

The club’s hierarchy will soon decide what internal punishment fits his drink-driving conviction. That verdict will shape how steep the climb back becomes.

When he finally returns to full fitness, the real work begins. Asencio will have to convince Mourinho, his team-mates and a demanding club that he can be trusted again. For a promising defender at one of the game’s most unforgiving institutions, the question is no longer just when he returns to the pitch, but what kind of player – and professional – walks back onto it.
