Arteta's Arsenal: A Perfect Start to the Season

Mikel Arteta has Arsenal moving like a team that refuses to stand still, even at the top of the mountain.

A flawless start to their Premier League title defence has set the tone, and inside the dressing room there’s a clear belief about where that comes from. New £75m signing Bruno Guimaraes has walked straight into the intensity of Arteta’s world and found no room for comfort.

The Brazilian, fresh from his move from Newcastle, has only just begun to taste life under his new manager, but the message has already been hammered home.

“I’m very happy to be able to train five or six times with the team. It’s great to be able to work with such a strong, impressive team,” Guimaraes told the Daily Mail. “They’re strong physically, strong in defence, strong in attack. It seems that this season they’re playing better than last season. I think that’s the goal, to improve every year. That’s the message that Arteta wants to pass on to us.”

Arteta isn’t just protecting a title. He’s trying to build something that never feels finished.

Guimaraes held back as groin issue lingers

For now, though, Guimaraes is having to watch more than he plays.

While Arsenal have surged out of the blocks, their marquee midfield arrival has been stuck managing a persistent groin problem. It has turned what should have been a statement start into a stop–start introduction.

He has been limited to a single substitute appearance against Aston Villa and didn’t get on the pitch in the 2-1 comeback win over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium, remaining an unused substitute as Arsenal turned the game around.

Arteta has taken no risks. At 28, Guimaraes is expected to be a central figure in a midfield stacked with options, but the manager has chosen caution over temptation. With the schedule already tightening and battles looming on several fronts, Arsenal want him fully fit for the long haul, not just the headlines of September and October.

The competition in that engine room is fierce. The expectation on Guimaraes is even fiercer.

Raya senses a new mentality

The shift isn’t only visible in the new faces. It’s written across the old guard too.

David Raya, now a champion with Arsenal, spoke after the Chelsea win about the psychological weight that finally lifted when the club ended their long wait for the league title.

“Of course, winning the league after that many years and after those years that you are so close, it gives you that relief and it gives you that extra confidence,” the Spanish goalkeeper said.

He pointed to the early markers this season as proof of that growing belief. “Coming from the three games, especially the Community Shield win against (Manchester) City, the way we played, that gives you extra motivation and extra confidence to play the way we want to play.”

There’s a steel about Arsenal now. Not just in how they defend their box, but in how they carry themselves when the pressure tightens.

Grinding, not just gliding, through games

That resilience was on show against Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea.

Arsenal fell behind, absorbed the punch, then clawed their way back to take all three points. It wasn’t the slick, free-flowing football that has become their calling card. It was something more blunt, more ruthless: champions’ football.

They have started this title defence with a perfect record, but it hasn’t all been about swagger. It has been about solving problems in real time, about finding a way when the rhythm isn’t there.

Now comes the next test.

Arsenal step out of England and into Europe this week, carrying that domestic authority onto the Champions League stage. On Wednesday night they travel to Napoli for their opening group game, a hostile setting and a serious examination of their credentials.

Arteta has his standards. His players have their belief. The question now is simple: can this relentless, evolving Arsenal bend Europe to their will the way they’ve bent the Premier League?
