Arteta Faces Chelsea Challenge with Tactical Decisions

Mikel Arteta is unlikely to rip anything up before Arsenal’s first major yardstick of the season, but he is clearly tempted to add a little more scar tissue to his back line.

Two games, two wins, two clean sheets. Arsenal have started with control and calm. Chelsea, by contrast, have flown out of the blocks in attack. Sunday at the Emirates is already being framed as Arsenal’s structure against Chelsea’s speed and swagger.

Arteta’s selection, though, might tilt that balance.

Konsa primed for full debut

Cristhian Mosquera’s withdrawal at Aston Villa on Monday was described as precautionary, yet it may open the door for a change that had been coming anyway. With Chelsea’s forwards in sharp early-season form, Arteta is considering more experience at the heart of defence.

Ezri Konsa is the obvious candidate. The summer signing is in line for his full debut in the Premier League for Arsenal, partnering Gabriel in the middle of a back four that should still feature Ben White on the right and Riccardo Calafiori on the left. David Raya is expected to continue in goal.

Arteta will not want to disturb a unit that has not conceded yet, but Chelsea’s movement between the lines and pace in transition demand authority and composure. Konsa offers both.

Midfield depth gives Arteta a dilemma

If Villa Park showed anything, it was the depth of Arsenal’s midfield. They finished that game stronger than they started it, and a big part of that was Bruno Guimaraes.

The Brazilian came off the bench and immediately raised the tempo, snapping into challenges and knitting attacks together. It was only a cameo, but it was enough to make Arteta think hard about his starting blend for a London derby that will be fought as much in the middle third as in either box.

Declan Rice is immovable. Martin Odegaard, the captain and creative heartbeat, is not going anywhere either. That leaves Myles Lewis-Skelly, impressive in his own right, as the likely casualty if Guimaraes is promoted to the XI.

Dropping a young midfielder before a marquee home game is a harsh lesson, but this is the level Arsenal want to live at: competition everywhere, sentiment nowhere.

Wide calls and Havertz trust

The biggest question in attack is on the left. Christos Tzolis struggled to impose himself against Villa, often on the fringes of the contest. Eberechi Eze, introduced at half-time, immediately gave Arsenal a different dimension, drifting into pockets, drawing fouls and unsettling defenders.

That impact has strengthened his case to start against Chelsea, yet the predicted line-up still has Tzolis holding his place. Arteta has shown before that he will reward training-ground work and tactical discipline even when a substitute shines.

Through the middle, the picture is clearer. Viktor Gyokeres is still waiting for his first Premier League minute of the season and is not expected to dislodge Kai Havertz here. Arteta has consistently leaned on the German in high-stakes fixtures, valuing his pressing, aerial presence and ability to link play even when the goals are not flowing.

On the right, Bukayo Saka looks in ominous early-season rhythm. Two games, two goals, and the sense that he is ready to carry even more responsibility. He will be hunting a third consecutive match on the scoresheet, and Chelsea know all too well how quickly he can tilt a contest.

With Odegaard operating between the lines, Saka stretching play on one flank and Tzolis or Eze on the other, Arsenal’s 4-2-3-1 still carries plenty of threat against a Chelsea defence that has yet to be fully tested.

Jurrien Timber and William Saliba remain out injured, limiting Arteta’s defensive options but not his ambition.
