Arsenal Boosted by Saka and Rice's Return Ahead of Manchester City Clash
Arsenal have been handed a major lift ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Manchester City, with Mikel Arteta confirming that Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are back in the frame for selection.
The pair, along with new signing Martin Zubimendi, have trained with the squad and are expected to be involved if they come through the final sessions as planned. Arteta, speaking in his pre-match press conference, struck an upbeat tone about their readiness.
“They will be available, they trained with us today, they will train tomorrow and if they are in the condition that we expect them to be, they will be involved,” the Spaniard said, underlining the importance of having his “heavyweights” back on deck for the curtain-raiser.
He also highlighted the attitude of a group that has reported back in sharp condition after a demanding summer. Many players cut their breaks short and returned early.
“Most of them [came back] earlier than expected, really fit with all the testing and they all seem in great condition,” Arteta noted, clearly pleased with the standards being set behind the scenes.
Defensive headaches amid attacking boost
The good news in attack and midfield is tempered by a more awkward picture at the back. Arsenal will be without Jurrien Timber and William Saliba against Enzo Maresca’s side, with both defenders still working their way through rehabilitation programmes.
Saliba’s situation is the more serious. Arteta described the Frenchman’s problem as a “long-term injury”, a blunt assessment that underlines how long the club expect to be without one of their defensive pillars.
Timber, by contrast, is edging closer. The Dutch international is not yet ready for competitive action, but the club see a clear path towards his return and are determined not to rush it.
“Jurrien is progressing really well,” Arteta explained. “He is on the pitch, we are ramping up now with certain actions and especially the volume and the load. I think he is on a good trajectory, but there is still a few weeks to go. Wilo, as we all know, it’s more a long-term injury.”
Timber’s versatility has become central to Arteta’s tactical blueprint, and his absence has been felt. The expectation is that he will rejoin full group training soon, with the next week to ten days marked out as a key phase as he starts to integrate fully with his teammates again.
“We have to wait and see,” Arteta added. “He needs to start to train with the group in the next week or so hopefully, and then see how he progresses from there. It’s been a long-term issue, and we want to make sure that every step that we take is the right one, he feels right to do that, because he’s such an important player for us.”
Eyes still on the market
Injuries at the back have only sharpened the focus on the transfer window. With the deadline approaching and Arsenal heavily linked with defensive reinforcements, Arteta refused to be drawn on specific targets but made no attempt to hide the club’s intent.
“I am not going to talk about an individual but what I can obviously tell you is [about] the ambition of the club,” he said. “It is big that we want to improve the squad, we want to evolve the squad, in order to achieve. We have detected some areas that they can be a strength in – that is what we are trying to do.”
Saka and Rice back. Timber edging closer. Saliba out for the long haul. A squad still being reshaped in the market. Arsenal walk into their first test against the champions knowing exactly where they are strong, and exactly where they still need answers.
