Arsenal opened their Premier League title defence with a comfortable win and a familiar knot in the stomach.

The goals were emphatic enough. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard all struck at the Emirates as Coventry were swept aside, the champions easing into the new campaign with the assurance of a team that knows exactly what it is. The performance, the scoreline, the swagger – all reassuring.

The injury bulletin, less so.

Guimaraes scare clouds clean start

Bruno Guimaraes, the £75million summer signing from Newcastle and the headline act of Arsenal’s midfield rebuild, did not feature against Coventry after sparking concern in the Community Shield.

He had impressed in the 3-0 win over Manchester City, playing the first half before being spotted after the interval on the bench with ice strapped to his right thigh. One image was enough to set alarms ringing among supporters who have seen too many promising starts derailed by soft-tissue problems.

Guimaraes then missed the Premier League opener, fuelling talk that he could be out for several weeks. Mikel Arteta moved quickly to calm the noise.

“No, no, no,” the Arsenal manager said when asked if the Brazilian faced a lengthy spell out. “We expect that not to be weeks at all. Let's see how he evolves this week. He didn't even want to stop. He wanted to carry on.

“Now we start to understand the character of the player, but I don't expect that to be a big issue.”

The message is clear: Arsenal hope this is a niggle, not a narrative. But with a trip to Villa Park looming next Monday, his progress over the coming days will shape Arteta’s midfield plans.

Timber still weeks away

At the back, the picture is more familiar and more frustrating.

Jurrien Timber’s season never really got going. Barring a late substitute appearance in the Champions League final, his football since March has been almost non-existent after a groin injury halted his momentum for both club and country.

The Dutch defender missed the World Cup and then underwent minor surgery in the summer. Arsenal do not expect him to feature before the end of the month, and Arteta has already warned that patience is required.

“I said in the next few weeks,” he reminded reporters before the Coventry game, underlining that Timber remains on a staggered timeline rather than an imminent return.

For a squad built on tactical flexibility and ball-playing defenders, Timber’s absence continues to bite.

Saliba blow shapes Konsa deal

Those defensive gaps forced Arsenal into the market. Injuries to Timber and William Saliba left Arteta short of elite options, and the club responded with a £55million move for Ezri Konsa.

The former Aston Villa defender could make his debut back at his old home, Villa Park, on Monday night. It would be a pointed twist: Arsenal’s new signing walking out in familiar surroundings while one of their most important defenders, Saliba, begins a long road back.

Saliba’s back problem is serious enough to sideline him for an extended spell, though there is at least one slice of good news – he will not need surgery.

A club statement last month set out the situation in stark terms: “Specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation.

“Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme.”

So Arsenal head to Villa with three storylines running in parallel: a marquee midfielder being nursed through a minor scare, a versatile defender still weeks away, and a cornerstone centre-back locked into rehab while his replacement prepares for a high-profile first outing.

The title defence has started with goals and control. The question is whether their fitness can keep pace with their ambition.
