Arsenal Dominates Manchester City 3-0 in Community Shield
Arsenal picked up exactly where they left off.
Mikel Arteta’s side brushed aside Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday, delivering a statement performance and lifting the club’s 18th title in the curtain-raiser.
Riccardo Calafiori needed less than a minute to announce himself. Myles Lewis-Skelly drove into space and whipped a low ball across the box; Calafiori arrived with perfect timing to steer it home and jolt City before they had even settled.
The early strike set the tone. Arsenal pressed high, snapped into challenges and played with the conviction of a team that believes it can turn near-misses into trophies this season.
The pressure told again before the break. Kai Havertz, increasingly influential in Arteta’s evolving attack, doubled the advantage, giving Arsenal a two-goal cushion that reflected their control and City’s uncertainty under new boss Enzo Maresca.
Any hope of a response after half-time vanished almost instantly.
Three minutes into the second half, Martin Odegaard, later named player of the match, danced through City’s back line. He skipped past Josko Gvardiol, glided away from Gianluigi Donnarumma and finished coolly to make it three, underlining the gulf on the day and wrapping up a difficult first competitive outing for Maresca.
Arsenal now roll back into the Emirates Stadium on Friday for their Premier League opener against newly promoted Coventry City, carrying momentum and expectation into a campaign that already feels loaded with promise.
Recruitment Drive
Arteta’s work, though, is not confined to the touchline.
Behind the scenes, the club’s recruitment drive continues to move at pace. According to Sky reporter Patrick Berger, Arsenal have registered their interest in Borussia Dortmund chief scout Sebastian Krug and made initial contact over a potential move.
Krug has spent close to a decade at Dortmund and sits at the heart of some of the Bundesliga side’s most lucrative deals. He played a major role in identifying and bringing in Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland, two signings that later delivered huge transfer windfalls.
Sky Germany reports that talks between Arsenal and Krug have already taken place in London. The Gunners are not alone in the chase: Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are also understood to have shown interest in the Dortmund talent-spotter.
Krug has held the chief scout title at Dortmund since 2022 and has shared the role with Laurent Busser since November 2024. His current contract runs until 2028, a detail that ensures any move would require an agreement with the German club and likely a significant negotiation.
If Arsenal decide to push ahead, Krug’s arrival would represent another heavyweight addition to an increasingly sophisticated recruitment structure, complementing a summer in which the first-team squad has already been reinforced.
On the pitch, Arsenal have landed the first blow of the season. Off it, they are trying to secure the kind of scouting firepower that can keep them there.
