Ipswich, who swept past Leicester City 3-1 in the second round, will sense opportunity. Arsenal arrive with momentum, but also with questions over key bodies.

White worry as Timber steps up

Ben White has been ever-present this season, a constant on the team sheet and a quiet pillar of Arteta’s structure. That is why the sight of him clutching his groin before being withdrawn at half time at the Stadium of Light raised alarm.

Arteta offered no immediate update after the game, yet the defender is now a major doubt for the trip to Portman Road. Losing White, even for a short spell, would slice into Arsenal’s defensive continuity just as the schedule begins to thicken.

The timing of Jurrien Timber’s return, then, could hardly be sharper. The Dutchman has just shaken off his own groin problem and came through the entire second half against Sunderland without issue. If White sits this one out, Timber’s availability gives Arteta a ready-made solution rather than a tactical headache.

Mosquera races the clock

Cristhian Mosquera has already missed three matches in all competitions after suffering a hamstring strain against Aston Villa. Those kinds of injuries can drag, but the early signs are positive.

Arteta has said the Spaniard is doing “really well” in his recovery, and crucially, Mosquera has not yet been ruled out of the third-round tie. That keeps the door open, even if Arsenal will be wary of rushing a defender whose athleticism is central to his game.

If he does make it, Mosquera offers fresh legs and height in a back line that may already be forced into one change.

Saliba’s long road back

One situation is far clearer. William Saliba remains Arsenal’s only confirmed long-term absentee.

The Frenchman’s back problem, which flared up during the World Cup, continues to keep him out, with his possible return date pencilled in for November 21 against Newcastle United. Until then, Arsenal must continue to navigate domestic and European demands without their defensive cornerstone.

That reality makes every knock to a fellow defender feel that bit heavier.

There is at least no disciplinary cloud hanging over Arteta’s squad. Arsenal have no suspensions to contend with for this tie.
