The Dutch defender had only just returned to first-team action last week after a long spell out with a groin injury, coming on as a substitute for Ben White. His comeback was one of the more encouraging stories of Arsenal’s early season.

This time, though, he stayed out of the squad entirely.

According to BBC Sport, Timber’s omission is viewed inside the club as a precaution. Crucially, the decision is not thought to be linked to any fresh setback with the groin problem that has stalked him for months.

Timber’s absence has already cost him plenty. He missed the 2026 World Cup with the injury and sat out Arsenal’s pre-season as well. After so much time on the sidelines, there is little appetite to rush him. The logic is simple: protect him now, reap the benefits later in the season.

Ben White joins growing defensive list

If Timber’s absence is about caution, Ben White’s is about concern.

The defender misses the Ipswich tie after picking up a muscular issue during the first half of Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Sunderland. He was forced off, and early indications point towards a groin problem, though the full extent has not yet been confirmed.

For a side already stretched at the back, the timing is awkward. Arsenal remain without William Saliba and Cristhian Mosquera, two more central defensive options. Saliba’s continued absence strips Arteta of his defensive linchpin, while Mosquera is expected to be the first of the pair to return, with hopes pinned on a comeback after the international break.

So Arsenal arrive at Portman Road in strong form but with a patched-up back line and a clear sense of priorities. The EFL Cup offers a shot at redemption after last year’s final heartbreak. The league table shows a team capable of sustaining a title charge.

The question now is whether this carefully managed caution around key defenders will keep Arsenal on course for both.
