Arsenal vs Chelsea: Injury Updates Ahead of London Derby

Mikel Arteta will take an unbeaten Arsenal into a collision with Chelsea on Sunday – and he might just have a few key pieces back in place in time for it.

The Arsenal manager moved to calm fears over Cristhian Mosquera after the defender limped out of Monday night’s 1-0 win at Aston Villa with a hamstring concern. Mosquera, who started at Villa Park before being replaced by Ezri Konsa, is being monitored but Arteta stressed the decision was largely preventative.

“He was more a precaution than anything else, so we'll have to see tomorrow in the session how he feels,” Arteta said, keeping the door open for the Spaniard to feature in the London derby at the Emirates Stadium.

Timber edging towards long-awaited return

The more eye-catching update came at full-back. Jurrien Timber, yet to play a competitive minute this season after a minor groin procedure in the summer, has finally stepped up his workload.

Timber was spotted in light training on Thursday and Arteta revealed the defender is edging closer to a comeback and could even force his way into the squad against Chelsea if all goes well.

“Yeah, he's in really good condition at the moment. As I said, he's been now a few weeks on the pitch and he's been training with us now, so he's in a good place,” Arteta explained.

It would be a major boost for a side already building early-season momentum, with Arsenal one of only four Premier League teams to have won both of their opening fixtures.

Guimaraes a doubt after fresh knock

Not all of the news was as encouraging. Bruno Guimaraes faces a race against time after picking up another knock in the win over Villa. The Brazilian has already missed the 3-0 opening-day victory over Coventry City, having suffered a problem in the Community Shield thrashing of Manchester City.

“Yeah, he had a knock against Villa in the previous game and he's been assessed. Hopefully tomorrow he will be okay for training,” Arteta said.

Neither Mosquera nor Guimaraes were seen in the latest training images from London Colney, underlining the uncertainty over their involvement.

Saliba’s registration fuels optimism

There was a quieter but significant development at centre-back. William Saliba, sidelined with a serious back issue sustained at the World Cup, has been named in both Arsenal’s 25-man Premier League squad and their Champions League list.

That decision signals belief inside the club that the Frenchman can return before January, when squads are resubmitted, even if the exact timeline remains unclear.

“Yes, we don't really know the amount of weeks he's going to be out because it's about a healing process in the beginning, it's a bit different,” Arteta said when asked for an update. “We know that we have to respect certain timings. The progression has been really positive in the last few weeks, but we need to wait and see how that one reaction will start to put a lot into it.”

For now, Arsenal move towards Sunday with their record perfect and their options slowly thickening. Chelsea arrive in the same position in the table, also boasting two wins from two, but recent history tilts red: the rivals met four times across all competitions last season, and Arsenal took three victories, drawing the other.

Another statement at the Emirates, with key defenders filtering back, and this early-season surge could start to feel like something more permanent.
