The former England winger, now with PT Prachuap in Thai League 1, was involved in a bizarre pre-match incident on Saturday night at Pattani that quickly went viral. As Townsend went through his warm-up, a member of the home staff appeared to lose control of a heavy pitch roller, which careered into the 35-year-old.

Townsend was knocked off his feet and his left leg was briefly trapped under the machine, sparking alarm on the touchline and online once footage hit social media. Somehow, he escaped serious injury.

He even came on later in the game, featuring off the bench in Prachuap’s 3-0 win.

For a player who has spent a career riding out full-blooded challenges in the Premier League and for England, it was a freak collision from the most unlikely of sources. No flying tackle. No late lunge. Just a wayward groundstaff vehicle on a Thai evening.

Townsend, a regular pundit on ITV, chose not to dwell on the scare. Instead, he turned it into content.

On Instagram, he poked fun at himself and at one of football’s most infamous away days, revisiting a recent post where he had compared a sun-soaked Thai trip with the cold, windswept reality of playing at Stoke.

“It turns out Stoke away wasn’t so bad after all. Swipe to see why,” he wrote on his story, alongside the clip of the roller incident.

Thai fans quickly leaned into the chaos. One post anointed him “The King of Memes in Thai League history”. Townsend replied in kind: “trust me”, followed by four laughing emojis.
