Alonso’s Tough-Love Call Helps Lavia Complete 90 Minutes
Romeo Lavia’s most important moment of Chelsea’s pre-season did not come from a crunching tackle or a line-splitting pass. It came from something far more basic, and far more personal: staying on the pitch until the final whistle.
Against AC Milan in Jakarta, Lavia completed 90 minutes – a landmark he had not hit in a competitive game for Chelsea in three years, and not even in a friendly for two. For a midfielder of his talent, that statistic tells its own story about setbacks, stalled momentum, and a body that has too often betrayed him.
This time, the story turned on a manager’s decision.
According to Kieran Gill of the Daily Mail, Xabi Alonso became aware that Lavia was carrying more than just physical scars. The Chelsea manager learned of a mental block around finishing matches, a psychological hurdle built on that “hellish” injury record. Alonso’s response was not to wrap his player in cotton wool. He did the opposite.
He started Lavia against Milan in the Indonesian capital and simply refused to bring him off.
Another coach might have looked at the minutes in his legs, the injury history, the humidity, and reached for the fourth official. Alonso didn’t. He decided that the full 90 would matter more than any short-term fatigue, that Lavia needed to feel his legs turn to jelly and still hear the final whistle from the pitch, not the bench.
The gamble was calculated. The message was clear.
Lavia got through it. When it was over, his team-mates knew what it meant. They celebrated with an exhausted colleague who had finally broken through a barrier that had been holding him back for years.
Then came the payoff, in the most old-school dressing-room currency possible: pizza.
A dozen boxes from nearby Pizza Marzano were delivered straight into the Chelsea dressing room, a simple reward for a complex step forward. Not a trophy, not a medal, but something that said: you did the hard thing, now enjoy this.
Chelsea’s pre-season is now in the books. The Premier League opener is only days away, the scrutiny about to intensify, the stakes about to rise. For Lavia, though, one of the most important battles of his season may already have been fought – and won – on a humid night in Jakarta, with tired legs, a full 90 on the clock, and a slice of pizza in hand.
