Tottenham Faces Triple Injury Setback Ahead of Premier League Opener
Tottenham’s new Premier League season starts with a headache. Their captain, their vice-captain and a key midfielder are all out before a ball has even been kicked.
Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro will both miss Saturday’s trip to Brentford, with Pape Matar Sarr joining them on the sidelines after suffering a late hamstring issue in the build-up to the game.
Injury Update
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi laid out the damage on Friday. “Micky is not on the list for tomorrow, like Pedro Porro,” he said. “Pape Matar Sarr no, because he felt some pain in his hamstring today. Nothing serious, but we don’t take risks.”
Van de Ven’s situation offers a little more encouragement. De Zerbi explained that the Dutch defender has stepped up his work with the squad.
“Today, he worked the group, and he is going very well,” the Italian said. “He suffered a problem during the pre-season of Australia, I don’t know if it was the flight, but not a big problem.”
Even so, Spurs will go into west London without the centre-back who has been handed the armband for the new campaign, and without Porro, his first-choice deputy in the leadership group.
Defensive Options
De Zerbi moved quickly to stress he still has options at the back. “[Marcos] Senesi, we have Ben Davies and in the right condition to play the game tomorrow,” he noted, with both defenders in line to shoulder more responsibility in Van de Ven’s absence.
The knock-on effect runs straight through Tottenham’s leadership hierarchy. With Van de Ven and Porro ruled out, third-choice captain Ben Davies is available but not expected to start at Brentford. James Maddison, fourth in line, is short of match fitness.
That opens the door for 18-year-old Archie Gray. Fifth on the leadership list and likely to deputise for Porro at right-back, the summer signing could find himself wearing the armband on his Premier League debut for the club.
A new season, a reshuffled back line, and a teenager potentially leading Tottenham out. For De Zerbi, the first test of his new era comes with an early examination of depth, character and nerve.
