Zirkzee at a Crossroads as Juventus Pursues Loan Move

Joshua Zirkzee’s time at Old Trafford is edging towards a decisive moment. Once a statement signing from Bologna, he is now a name on the market, a talented forward caught between expectation and reality.

Manchester United are open to selling the Dutchman, and the line of suitors is growing. According to The Athletic, two unnamed Premier League rivals have already checked in on his situation, testing the waters as United weigh up their options. Ajax also made an enquiry, sounding out the club’s stance as they reshaped their attack.

That Dutch reunion, though, looks unlikely. Ajax have already brought in Marcos Leonardo and Tolu Arokodare, and with those arrivals their need for another central striker has eased. The window opened; it seems to have closed just as quickly.

Italy is a different story.

Juventus are pushing hard, working on a loan deal to bring Zirkzee back to Serie A. The 23-year-old has given his approval to the idea, keen on a return to the league where he first looked like a star in the making. For Juve, it is a chance to add a technically refined forward without committing to a huge fee up front. For Zirkzee, it looks like a lifeline.

When United paid £36.5 million to sign him from Bologna in 2024, they believed they were getting the polished version of the player who had lit up the 2023–24 Serie A season. He arrived with flair, touch, and a reputation as one of Europe’s most intriguing young forwards. The Premier League, though, has bitten back.

The adaptation has been brutal. Across the past two league campaigns, Zirkzee has managed only 19 starts in 56 appearances. Five goals in the Premier League is a thin return for a striker signed to change the tempo of United’s attack. The talent is obvious; the impact has not been.

Yet the story is not one of decline, just misfit. His recent pre-season strike against Rosenborg — a sharp, technically assured finish — was a reminder of what he can do when the game flows to his feet and not over his head. It was the kind of goal that tempts clubs into believing they can be the ones to unlock him.

That is the bet Juventus are preparing to make. A loan deal would protect them if his Old Trafford struggles follow him to Turin, but if he reconnects with his Serie A form, they gain a forward who can link play, drift between the lines and finish with calm authority.

For United, the calculation is colder. A player signed at significant cost has not become the focal point they imagined. With the club open to a sale and the market finally stirring, a loan with a potential exit route might be the cleanest way to reset for all involved.

Zirkzee stands between two versions of his career: the one that exploded in Italy, and the one that stalled in England. If Juventus get their way, Serie A will decide which version defines his next chapter.
