Cristiano Ronaldo Sits Out Portugal's Match Against Norway Amid Tensions
Portugal's campaign under Jorge Jesus started strongly, with the coach securing three wins in a row at the beginning of his tenure. The team edged past Wales in his first match as manager, then triumphed on challenging trips to Norway and Denmark. At this point, Portugal leads its UEFA Nations League group with a perfect record.
Still, this promising start has been overshadowed by controversy involving Cristiano Ronaldo. The 41-year-old striker is once again absent from Portugal’s squad for their upcoming match against Norway on Sunday.
The Fallout Behind Ronaldo’s Absence
Ronaldo’s reaction after being left out has stirred plenty of attention. Known for his fiery temperament, it was not surprising when he expressed frustration after Jesus, who previously managed him at Al Nassr, dropped him for the earlier game against Norway last week.
Following a poor performance versus Wales that ended with an early substitution, Ronaldo found himself on the bench for the trip to Oslo. Although Jesus had promised him some playing time, Ronaldo remained unused during the 2–1 win. With the team protecting a slim lead, the coach decided not to send him on late in the match.
“I can promise whatever I want, I’m the coach,” said Jesus after the game. “No player will ever make a decision for me.”
Ronaldo was visibly upset by his omission and the coach’s comments. He subsequently left the national team camp immediately, ruling himself out for the 4–2 victory over Denmark and the upcoming home fixture against Norway.
“After the press conference of the National Team coach, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the National Team camp,” Ronaldo wrote on social media. “In due time, I will tell all the Portuguese about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, which I always dedicated myself to. Now it’s time to wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates, without exception.”
His absence continues to be the main talking point ahead of the clash with a Norway side led by Erling Haaland, while also raising questions about Ronaldo’s future with Portugal.
Supporters Rally Behind Ronaldo
After 23 years of service and his iconic status in Portugal, many fans quickly took Ronaldo’s side. Supporters even put up billboards around Lisbon and nearby areas to show their backing.
- Billboard message: "Thank you Cristiano Ronaldo for everything you’ve done for Portugal. You will always be our captain. Portugal is always with you."
- Criticism aimed at Jorge Jesus: Accused of "mistreating" Ronaldo and having an "inflated ego."
The Portuguese Football Federation faces ongoing challenges as this saga unfolds.
