Yan Diomande: Liverpool's Pursuit Amid Leipzig's Price Tag

Yan Diomande has set his sights on Anfield. RB Leipzig, though, have slapped a price tag on him that makes even Liverpool blink.

The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international is emerging as one of the most coveted wide forwards in Europe, and Liverpool have moved early. With Mohamed Salah set to leave this summer, the club’s hierarchy and new head coach Andoni Iraola see Diomande as the ideal heir to the right flank that the Egyptian has owned for nearly a decade.

Liverpool have been tracking Diomande for some time and are now deep in discussions with his representatives. Paris Saint-Germain are circling as well, but the winger’s preference is clear. According to The i Paper, Diomande wants Liverpool. He wants Salah’s shirt, Salah’s role, Salah’s responsibility.

That’s only half the battle.

A price that makes Europe pause

Liverpool have opened talks with RB Leipzig over a deal, yet the first major obstacle is brutally simple: money.

The i Paper reports that Leipzig want £120 million. In Germany, Bild go even higher, suggesting the Bundesliga club could demand as much as €150m (£129.6m, $174.5m). For a 19-year-old with enormous potential but limited top-level mileage, those are numbers that reshape a transfer window.

Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, are no strangers to big calls in the market, but this one bites hard. Any move would require Leipzig to soften their stance on price. Without that, the deal stalls.

The player, for his part, is “keen on the move – and the prospect of becoming Salah’s heir,” The i Paper adds. The ambition is there. The fit is there. The fee is not.

Leipzig dig in

Inside Leipzig, there is no rush to cash in. Far from it.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey reports that Leipzig want to keep Diomande and are prepared to show it. The club intend to keep the teenager for at least another season and are working on a new contract that would include a release clause, giving them control now and clarity later.

Crucially, Diomande is not agitating for a move. Sources say he is not pushing to leave, which strengthens Leipzig’s hand at the negotiating table. They can point to a long-term project, guaranteed minutes, and a pathway built around him, rather than the pressure of walking straight into Salah’s shadow at Anfield.

Liverpool, then, find themselves in a familiar modern dilemma: a player who wants the move, a coach who wants the player, and a selling club who simply do not want to sell.

Iraola’s first big test

Inside Liverpool, there is alignment. Iraola is fully behind FSG’s pursuit of Diomande and views him as central to reshaping the attack post-Salah. The club’s recruitment team have been preparing for this transition for some time, and Diomande sits at the top of that shortlist.

But desire alone does not close a deal at nine-figure levels. If Leipzig refuse to budge and insist on their valuation, Liverpool may be forced to pivot and identify an alternative right-winger to fill the void.

This is the reality of replacing a legend. There is no straight swap for Salah, no like-for-like bargain waiting to be plucked from a mid-table squad. To get close, clubs must pay, or they must walk away and trust their scouting.
