Xabi Alonso Prepares Chelsea for Tottenham Clash
Xabi Alonso is unlikely to treat this as just another pre-season run-out.
Chelsea face Tottenham on Saturday morning in a meeting of two new projects and two fiercely driven coaches, and the Spaniard looks ready to lean harder on his biggest names after easing his way into the job.
Alonso edges towards a stronger Chelsea
In his second game in charge, Alonso initially kept most of his stars on ice, only unleashing them in bulk with around 25 minutes to play. Robert Sanchez, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Cole Palmer, Marco Palestra, Estevao, Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro all arrived together, a late surge of quality that changed the feel of the contest.
This time, the waiting may not last as long.
Alonso wants to land an early blow on Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham, and he knows what a sharp, front-foot performance against a London rival can do for his standing with Chelsea fans. That points towards a stronger XI from the first whistle.
Sanchez is in line to replace Teddy Sharman-Lowe in goal, a natural shift towards seniority. In front of him, Colwill is pushing to step into the starting line-up at centre-back as he builds fitness and rhythm after his own interruptions. The spine, slowly, is taking shape.
Summer signing Marco Palestra is another who will be desperate for elevation. He is yet to start in royal blue, and this fixture offers the perfect stage for a first serious look at him from kick-off. Yet his path is not entirely clear.
Young faces fighting to stay in
Landon Emenalo has caught Alonso’s eye over the summer and may keep his place at left-back. The youngster has played with a conviction that managers notice quickly, and Alonso has not been shy about rewarding that edge.
On the opposite flank and further forward, the story is similar. Reggie Watson’s display against Western Sydney resonated with the Chelsea support, his energy and intent giving a glimpse of what this new era might look like. He has earned another opportunity, and this meeting with Spurs offers a more searching examination of his credentials.
Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli also forced his way into the conversation with a bright cameo off the bench. He is now in contention to start, another academy product trying to convert pre-season minutes into something more permanent when the real games arrive.
Romeo Lavia, meanwhile, is back on his feet. Alonso has confirmed the midfielder is fit again after missing the Western Sydney match with hamstring discomfort. Yet given Lavia’s long and frustrating battle with injuries, the head coach is not expected to gamble on him here. Caution, for once, trumps curiosity.
Attack takes shape around Palmer and Joao Pedro
Higher up the pitch, the attacking puzzle is beginning to look more defined.
Dastan Satpayev will hope to keep his spot on the left, having done enough to stay in the frame. On the right, Cole Palmer is poised to step in from the start, his creativity and calm in tight spaces likely to be central to Alonso’s plans against a De Zerbi side that will demand sharp decisions under pressure.
Reggie Walsh is set to continue in the No10 role, a nod to his influence between the lines. Behind him, Liam Delap appears the likely casualty as Joao Pedro pushes to lead the line. The Brazilian’s movement and penalty-box presence give Chelsea a different dimension, and this feels like the moment to test that against Premier League-level opposition.
New signings wait, injuries linger
Not everyone will be involved.
Maxence Lacroix, whose move from Crystal Palace was confirmed by Chelsea on Thursday, will not feature. The same applies to Morgan Rogers, still on post-World Cup holidays and yet to link up fully with Alonso’s squad.
There are also fitness question marks that refuse to clear. It is still unclear whether Jorrel Hato or Mamadou Sarr will be ready after missing the Western Sydney match, leaving Alonso with decisions to make in defence if neither is passed fit.
Filip Jorgensen, meanwhile, has already flown home to complete a transfer, taking one option out of the goalkeeping rotation just as the competition was beginning to heat up.
So this is where Alonso finds himself: a squad brimming with promise, some key pieces still missing, and a London rival coached by De Zerbi standing in front of him. For a manager only two games into his reign, it is still pre-season on paper.
On the pitch, though, this already feels like a test of how quickly his Chelsea can grow up.
