Wrexham's Frustrating Draw Against Cardiff City in Welsh Derby

Phil Parkinson left the Cardiff City Stadium furious with his side’s wastefulness and the length of stoppage time after a 98th-minute free-kick robbed Wrexham of a statement Welsh derby win over Cardiff City.

Wrexham had the perfect start to their Championship return. With barely three minutes gone, Kieffer Moore struck to silence the home crowd and tilt the night in the visitors’ favour. From there, Parkinson’s team repeatedly opened Cardiff up and carried the greater threat, only to let their rivals off the hook.

They created chances. Plenty of them. They also rattled the woodwork twice, edging closer and closer to a second goal that never came. Cardiff clung on, their goalkeeper making important stops without ever being forced into the spectacular.

The longer Wrexham failed to finish the job, the more the tension grew. The clock ticked past 90, into added time. Still they led. Still they looked like dragging a hard-fought, gritty win over the line.

Then came the sting.

Deep into stoppage time – the 98th minute – Cardiff won a free-kick. Rubin Colwill stepped up and hammered it in, the final act of the game and a brutal twist for a Wrexham side who had done almost everything right except kill the contest.

Parkinson did not hide his frustration.

“We've had chances to kill the game off. We haven't taken them, the keeper's made saves, but we haven't really made him make a top-class save,” he said, reflecting on the missed opportunities that turned three points into one.

“We knew we could give Cardiff problems and time and time again we did. Really in the cold light of day, the game should have been out of sight, but it wasn't.”

A derby performance full of intent, energy and chances. A result that feels like a defeat. If Wrexham are to make a serious mark on the Championship, this is the edge they must find: turning dominance into daylight before the final whistle – and before the 98th minute comes calling again.
