Marc Cucurella's Long-Awaited Debut for Real Madrid
Marc Cucurella had waited a long time for this. On a warm pre-season night in Gelsenkirchen, the Spaniard finally pulled on the Real Madrid shirt in a match situation, stepping off the bench in the 61st minute against Schalke 04 at the Veltins-Arena.
It was only a friendly. For him, it felt like much more.
Real Madrid’s win over the German side served as the final tune-up before the new league campaign, but for their new defender it was a personal landmark. These were his first pre-season minutes, his first chance to feel the pace, the weight of the shirt, the rhythm of a team that expects to win every time it steps onto the pitch.
“I am very happy,” Cucurella told Realmadrid TV after the final whistle, his relief obvious. “I think it was a great match for everyone and a great result before starting the League. These were my first minutes, and I’m very eager. The wait was long, but now, little by little, I’m getting into rhythm and looking forward to starting the League.”
The cameo may have been brief, but it mattered. He moved with intent, slotted into the defensive line, and helped close out a positive result as Los Blancos rounded off their preparations. For a player who has grafted for years to earn this opportunity, simply being out there was a reward in itself.
“Very good,” he said of his debut. “I think with these teammates, everything is easier. These were the first minutes of the season, and little by little, I’m finding my rhythm, and soon the real competition begins.”
Behind the calm delivery lay years of work. Cucurella made a point of underlining just how much it had taken to reach this stage.
“I am very happy. Behind all this, there is a lot of work, and all the effort I’ve put in over the years has been worth it. I’m very happy with everything that’s happening to me, and I hope it continues this way – winning titles and, above all, being able to enjoy this experience.”
That word — group — came up again when he spoke about the dressing room. New arrivals at Real Madrid often talk about pressure; Cucurella talked about people.
“They are really good people. I think they make it very easy for everyone to adapt,” he explained. “The important thing is to have a good group so that it shows on the field that we are united. That’s how you win.”
The unity he described will be tested soon enough when the league season begins, but the early signs behind closed doors are clearly encouraging for him. He has walked into a dressing room full of serial winners and felt welcomed, not overwhelmed.
The backing has not only come from inside the club. Cucurella has already felt the pull of the Real Madrid fanbase, even before his first competitive appearance.
“I’ve received many messages,” he revealed, “and I will always try to give my best in every minute I have. I think the most important thing, and what we all want, is to win titles with this jersey.”
One pre-season outing in Gelsenkirchen will not define his time at Real Madrid. It did, however, mark the start. Now the real question is how far this long-awaited debut can carry him once the serious business begins.
