World Cup 2026: Managers Face Final Squad Deadline

The clock will be merciless. By Monday, 1 June, every nation heading to the 2026 Fifa World Cup must lock in its final squad of up to 26 players. No more experiments. No more late auditions. Just a list that will define a summer – and in some cases, a generation.

Fifa will rubber-stamp those squads the following day, Tuesday, 2 June. From that moment, the room for manoeuvre almost disappears.

Changing the Squad

There are only two ways to change a squad once it has been confirmed.

The first is brutal but familiar: a serious injury or illness. If a player breaks down badly enough, a coach can replace him, but only up to 24 hours before the team’s opening match of the tournament. Miss that window and the decision, however painful, is final.

Once that first ball is kicked, the outfield group is effectively sealed. No late cameos, no surprise recalls. The 20‑odd outfielders you take are the ones you live and die with.

Goalkeepers, though, live by slightly different rules. If a keeper suffers a serious injury or illness at any point during the tournament, he can be replaced, even after the group stage, even on the eve of a knockout tie. It is the only position granted that safety net.

Within those regulations, there is still a little flexibility. A final World Cup squad can include between 23 and 26 players, but at least three of them must be goalkeepers. Coaches can trim, but they cannot skimp on that specialist role.

England and Scotland have already shown their hand, both opting for the full 26, both building around the standard three-keeper structure that most contenders now see as non‑negotiable.

For the managers, the dates are fixed, the margins tight, and the stakes obvious: choose right by 1 June, or spend the World Cup living with the one name you left off the list.
