Violence Erupts in Johor Bahru During World Cup Final Screening

A World Cup final that should have ended in shared awe and late-night debate instead spilled into violence in Johor Bahru, where a screening of Spain’s clash with Argentina descended into a street brawl and a swift police operation.

Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said officers received a report of the incident at 5.40am, in the uneasy quiet that follows a long football night. Within hours, the mood in Taman Setia Indah had changed again — this time under the glare of blue lights.

Between 10am and 11am, police moved in.

“All the suspects were arrested around the Taman Setia Indah area not long after the incident was reported,” Ab Rahaman was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia. The arrests closed the first chapter of a case that had already begun ricocheting around social media.

A two-minute, 36-second clip, now widely shared online, captures the chaos. What began as a communal screening of the World Cup final — Spain and Argentina on the screen, emotions running high — erupted into a full-blown fight. The footage shows a melee breaking out, with tempers clearly snapping long after the final whistle.

Checks on those detained revealed that three of the suspects have prior criminal records, according to Ab Rahaman. That detail will not calm local concerns about security at large public screenings, especially during major tournaments when passion often runs close to the edge.

The investigation now moves into the courts. Police will bring the suspects to the Johor Bahru magistrates’ court tomorrow to seek a remand order as they probe the case under Section 148 of the Penal Code, which deals with rioting with weapons.

On a night meant to celebrate the world’s biggest game, it is the scenes off the screen that may linger longest in Johor.
