Vinicius Jr Returns to Training Amid Contract Uncertainty

Jose Mourinho has his star winger back on the training pitch on Monday. Whether Vinicius Jr is still his player when the real games start is a very different question.

The Brazilian reported back for pre-season as planned after his post-World Cup break, Mourinho confirming after Real Madrid’s 2-2 friendly draw with Fiorentina in Austria that Vinicius would join Brahim Diaz and new signing Bernardo Silva at Valdebebas. For now, it is business as usual. On the surface.

Underneath, the clock is ticking loudly.

Vinicius, 26, is into the final 12 months of his contract at the Bernabeu. Talks between his camp and Madrid are ongoing, but they have dragged on long enough to embolden predators. Arsenal, sensing a rare opening at the top shelf of European talent, are circling.

The Independent reported over the weekend that Arsenal have already made headway, agreeing the outline of a personal deal with Vinicius that would rank as the boldest transfer move in the club’s history. Not a speculative enquiry. A framework.

At the same time, ESPN reported that Madrid are open to the possibility of selling the forward if no agreement can be reached on a new contract, with the club refusing to raise their latest renewal offer. The stand-off has hardened. Neither side is blinking.

That tension comes at a complicated moment for Madrid’s own recruitment drive. Their pursuit of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, a deal worth more than £100million, has stalled. The champions are on the verge of finally landing Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle in an £80m deal, with the midfielder widely expected to undergo a medical on Monday. Arsenal’s long pursuit of the Brazil international is close to completion, just as he was due to link up with Newcastle’s pre-season camp in La Manga after his own World Cup break.

Instead of Spain with Newcastle, Guimaraes is now heading towards London. A key pillar of Eddie Howe’s project is being removed, and Newcastle are already moving on to replacements.

The Tyneside club have turned their attention to Inter Milan midfielder Petar Sucic as a potential successor in the middle of the park, having already confirmed the £25m signing of Czech Republic goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Braga.
