Victor Munoz Cuts Holiday to Debut for Liverpool

Victor Munoz has barely had time to hang his World Cup medal before throwing himself into the next challenge. The new Liverpool winger has sacrificed the final stretch of his mandated break to accelerate his start at Anfield – and he wants his first appearance as soon as Sunday.

The 23-year-old arrived on Merseyside this week and trained with his new teammates for the first time on Wednesday, having finally shaken off the injury that ruined his World Cup on a personal level, even as Spain lifted the trophy for a second time in the United States last month.

By rights, he should still be on a beach.

FIFA regulations entitled him to a three-week holiday after the tournament, a window that would have pushed his Liverpool bow towards the latter part of August. Instead, he cut it short, swapped suncream for shinpads and reported early to a squad still feeling the strain of a thin pre-season group.

“I was at the World Cup when the decision came through about the transfer,” Munoz told Liverpool’s official website. Unable to play for Spain because of his injury, his focus quickly shifted. “As soon as that competition was over the main thing on my agenda was getting here, training and getting to meet my team-mates.

“You need time to adapt when you are moving to a new club and a new country so for me it was a case of the earlier I could get started, the better.”

Liverpool’s only summer signing so far

Munoz arrives with a £34.5million price tag after Liverpool triggered his release clause at Osasuna in June, a move that caught many off guard given the heavy links to Newcastle at the time. For now, he stands as Liverpool’s only senior summer signing.

French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet has also joined from Rennes in a £60m deal, though that transfer was completed back in January and the defender has already had months to bed in.

The contrast is stark. New manager Andoni Iraola has spent pre-season juggling injuries, a short squad and staggered returns for other World Cup players. Sessions have been light on numbers and heavy on improvisation. Into that context walks Munoz, fresh from the biggest tournament in the sport but desperate simply to play again.

“I’m ready”

If Iraola is tempted to hold him back, the player is doing his best to make that decision difficult.

“Well, I think I’m ready,” Munoz said. “Obviously if the coach says so after training and asks me to feature in the starting XI, I’ll be there. I’m keen and I can’t wait to get started. [Against] Monaco, why not?”

That Monaco game on Sunday is no gentle curtain-raiser. It is Iraola’s first home match in charge at Anfield and comes on the back of a bruising end to Liverpool’s US tour, where a second-half collapse against Leeds turned a 2-0 lead into a 4-2 defeat. All four goals were conceded after the interval, a reminder of how fragile a half-built side can look.

Anfield will expect a response. Iraola will demand one. Munoz, if selected, could find himself thrown straight into a stadium and a fanbase that rarely does “quiet easing in.”

Why Liverpool, why now?

Munoz is clear that this move is about more than minutes. It is about trajectory.

“I’m sure it’s the correct step for me and this is exactly what the coach, Andoni, said to me as well – that he was going to put a lot of confidence in me,” he explained.

“He rightly pointed out that I am quite a young player, I’m here as a professional and he is going to help me. He is going to help me to develop, and develop within and for this great club and in this mythical stadium, Anfield.”

Those are big words for a young winger stepping into a club in transition, with a new manager, a quiet transfer window and a fanbase still measuring what comes after the last era. But Munoz has already shown where his priorities lie: he traded the final days of his summer for early sprints on the training pitch.

If Iraola believes the same gamble can pay off on Sunday, Anfield may get its first glimpse of a player in a hurry to belong.
