UEFA Introduces Swiss Format for European Qualifiers Starting 2028

International football is about to experience a major shift. UEFA will officially approve in Thessaloniki the use of the Swiss format—the same system used in the club Champions League—for both the Nations League and the qualification rounds for World Cups and European Championships beginning in 2028, as reported by AS.

A New League of 36 National Teams

The familiar group stage setup will be replaced by a league consisting of 36 national teams. Each nation will face six opponents, playing three matches at home and three away. These matchups will involve teams from various competitive levels. The goal is to cut down on predictable fixtures and boost the appeal and value of broadcasting rights.

Changes to International Calendars and Venues

FIFA will also introduce double international windows, allowing each national team to play four games within a 15-day span. Additionally, it has been confirmed that the Camp Nou stadium will host the 2029 Champions League final.
