Tottenham Target Emiliano Martinez After Vicario's Departure

Tottenham have turned their attention to Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez as they scramble to reshape their goalkeeping department after agreeing to send Guglielmo Vicario to Juventus.

The north London club, who survived relegation only on the final day of last season, have already torn into the market with a sense of urgency. Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke have arrived to stiffen the defence. Martin Dubravka has come in as experienced cover. In midfield, the spending has been eye-watering: Mateus Fernandes for £85m from West Ham and Sandro Tonali for £92.5m from Newcastle United.

All of it is designed to give Roberto De Zerbi a squad with enough steel and personality to avoid another season spent staring down the trapdoor.

Vicario out, Juventus in

The first major outgoing is now in motion. On Monday, Fabrizio Romano delivered his trademark confirmation that Vicario is Juventus-bound. Posting on X, he reported that Spurs had accepted a loan proposal with an option to buy, stressing that the clause is not mandatory and that Vicario pushed for the move.

David Ornstein then backed up the story, adding that Juventus’ offer was sent overnight and that all parties expect the 29-year-old Italy international to complete the switch next summer, with the deal advancing after a previous pursuit of Martinez was called off.

That twist has opened a fresh door for Tottenham.

Spurs move for Martinez

With Vicario on his way and only Antonin Kinsky as an internal option, Spurs have moved quickly. According to Football Insider, the club have “made a move” for Aston Villa’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Martinez, whose own proposed transfer to Juventus recently collapsed.

De Zerbi’s side are described as actively exploring a deal for the 33-year-old Argentina international after agreeing Vicario’s departure. The timing is no coincidence. Villa, it is understood, are open to letting Martinez leave this summer, particularly after wrapping up a deal for Zion Suzuki from Parma.

The expectation, again via Football Insider, is that Suzuki will be installed as Villa’s No. 1 for the 2026-27 campaign. That would clear the way for Martinez to make a high-profile switch within the Premier League – and potentially land in north London as the new anchor of De Zerbi’s rebuild.

If Tottenham pull it off, they would be swapping a keeper who arrived as a project for one with proven big-stage pedigree and a reputation for thriving under pressure. For a club still haunted by last season’s flirtation with the drop, that matters.

Moore’s future on hold

The goalkeeper reshuffle is not the only moving part in Spurs’ summer. Young winger Mikey Moore, who spent last season on loan at Rangers, is close to another temporary move, this time to Cologne.

BILD Rhineland, via Sport Witness, report that the Bundesliga side are lining up a season-long loan and consider the deal to be on track. But there is a hitch: De Zerbi.

The Italian is said to be blocking Moore’s exit until Tottenham secure attacking reinforcements of their own. He wants cover in wide areas before he signs off on another youngster heading out the door.

Cologne, for now, are relaxed. The expectation is that the deal will still be completed later in the window.

Tottenham, though, have more urgent fires to fight. They need a new No. 1, a settled dressing room and a squad that looks upwards, not over its shoulder. If Martinez walks through the door, the mood around Hotspur Way could change very quickly.
