Tottenham Target Cody Gakpo Amid Liverpool's Firm Stance

Tottenham’s summer rebuild has a new headline name in its sights.

Standard Sport understands Spurs are keen on Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, with the Dutch international emerging as a serious option for their left flank and as cover through the middle. For now, though, it is interest from a distance. No formal talks have taken place with Liverpool, and the Merseyside club are not actively inviting them.

Liverpool’s position is clear: they have no plans to sell. Not while they are still searching for a successor to Mohamed Salah. The club’s recruitment focus is fixed on Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, who sits at the top of their attacking wish list and is reportedly valued at around £145million.

That figure underlines the scale of the transition Liverpool are planning. It also explains why they are reluctant to weaken their forward line any further.

Yet the story refuses to close there.

Caught Offside report that Gakpo would be open to joining Spurs if the clubs can agree a fee. Football Insider suggest an asking price in the region of £70m has been floated, a number that tests the resolve of both sides: Liverpool’s determination to keep him, and Tottenham’s willingness to push their spending even higher.

Roberto De Zerbi has already overseen a major overhaul in north London. Spurs have spent £237m this summer on six new signings, reshaping the squad with the urgency of a club that knows it is close, but not quite there. The Italian has made it clear he is not finished. He wants two or three more players through the door before the window closes and has publicly framed the club’s transfer work as only “60 per cent done.”

That is not the language of a manager ready to settle.

A winger is high on the agenda, with another striker also under consideration. Gakpo fits neatly into that plan: a left-sided attacker who can operate as a No9, offering De Zerbi tactical flexibility and extra firepower in a season that will demand depth.

For now, Liverpool are holding their line. Spurs are watching, weighing up the cost. Gakpo, by all accounts, is open to the move.

Somewhere between £70m and Liverpool’s reluctance lies the answer to whether this is just another summer rumour, or the next big statement in Tottenham’s aggressive rebuild.
