Tottenham Secures £100m Sandro Tonali Deal, Outbidding Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur have struck a £100million agreement with Newcastle United for Sandro Tonali, edging out Arsenal after the Gunners walked away from a chance to sign the Italy international.

Tonali, 26, is set to become the second player to break Spurs’ transfer record in the same window. Matheus Fernandes is already on his way from West Ham United in an £85m move, with both deals understood to be in place and pointing to a radical rebuild of Ange Postecoglou’s midfield.

Two of the most coveted central midfielders on the Premier League market this summer are now heading to north London – but both to the white half.

Arsenal walk away from Tonali

It could have been very different. ChronicleLive report that Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, approached Arsenal and offered his client to the Emirates hierarchy.

Arsenal, though, are said to have rejected the opportunity. The numbers were too heavy. Tonali is expected to earn around £275,000 per week at Tottenham on a six-year contract, a level the Gunners were unwilling to match. Riso was also seeking a 10 per cent agent commission.

For a club that has carefully managed its wage structure under Mikel Arteta and Edu, the demands represented a line they would not cross, even for a player of Tonali’s profile.

Spurs had no such hesitation.

Spurs push the boat out

football.london understands Tottenham’s deal with Newcastle is structured at an initial £92.5m, with a further £7.5m in add-ons linked to Champions League qualification. An improved offer – around £20m higher than their opening £80m proposal – finally convinced Newcastle to cash in.

It is a statement signing. Tonali arrives as a marquee figure, a midfielder Newcastle once viewed as a long-term cornerstone. His agent made no secret earlier this year of the ambition behind the original move to England.

“Exactly, that was the goal from the moment he went to England – to try to make him a star player,” Riso said in March. “I think he's the Italian footballer with one of the highest values in the world.

“The deal came about because a club like Newcastle, with unlimited financial resources, had decided to invest in Sandro. We considered the idea of having the player play in a higher-level league.”

That “higher-level league” will now be experienced from a different dugout, and in a very different project.

Postecoglou’s midfield, already evolving, will look unrecognisable next season. Tonali’s arrival alongside Fernandes gives Spurs a powerful, technical and expensive new core. The club that for years hesitated at the very top of the market is now paying Champions League prices to force its way back into that competition.

Newcastle cash in, but brace for more interest

For Newcastle, the sale of Tonali follows the £80m departure of Anthony Gordon earlier in the summer. By the time the Italian’s move is completed, the club will have banked close to £180m in major outgoings.

That cash strengthens their hand in other negotiations – and may harden their stance over Bruno Guimaraes.

Arsenal’s interest in the Brazil international is long-standing, stretching back to his days at Atletico Paranaense in 2020. Their admiration has never really gone away. With Tonali now leaving Tyneside, though, Newcastle have even less incentive to entertain offers for their captain.

Chief executive David Hopkinson signposted this approach three months ago when discussing the club’s transfer strategy.

“We think through what players might or might not want to do this summer,” he said. “But if an [Alexander] Isak-like scenario presents itself again, any player under contract is going to leave on our terms. And we're going to maximise the opportunity that might represent for the club.”

Tonali has become that scenario. Spurs have paid those terms.

The question now is simple: will this £100m gamble power Tottenham back into the elite – or leave Arsenal wondering if they just let a title rival’s midfield be built on their doorstep?
