Tottenham Refuses to Sell Cristian Romero to Arsenal

Arsenal tested the rivalry. Tottenham slammed it shut.

Spurs have made it clear they will not sell Cristian Romero to Arsenal under any circumstances this summer, ending a bold – and, in truth, audacious – attempt from their north London neighbours to prise away the Argentine defender.

The stance, reported by The Athletic, is absolute. Arsenal came calling, exploring a surprise move as they scramble for defensive cover. Tottenham’s answer was short and final: not to them.

Arsenal’s defensive scramble

The Gunners are in an uncomfortable position. William Saliba, the cornerstone of their back line, is facing an extended spell out with a serious back problem. He played through the pain during France’s World Cup campaign; the bill has now arrived.

Arsenal have confirmed the French international does not need surgery, but he will still miss a significant chunk of the season. For a side defending a Premier League title, that is a fault line they cannot ignore.

They have already tried to move. A formal bid went in for Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, only to be swiftly rejected. Villa are holding out for around £60 million for the England international, and they are in no rush to compromise.

Blocked by Villa, rebuffed by Spurs, Arsenal’s search for a centre-back has become increasingly tense as the window ticks towards its close.

Spurs draw the line at the border

Tottenham’s position on Romero is nuanced but firm. They are open to selling. Just not across the road.

The club are prepared to move the 28-year-old on to a foreign side and have already agreed a €40m (£34m) fee with Inter. That deal, though, is stuck in neutral while Romero and the Serie A club work through personal terms. No agreement yet, no green light.

That hesitation has left the door ajar for other European heavyweights, and Atletico Madrid have walked straight back into the frame. Atleti have admired Romero for a long time and are now seen as a far likelier destination than the Emirates. If he goes, it will be on a plane, not a short drive across north London.

For Tottenham, the principle is clear: strengthen the balance sheet if you must, but not Arsenal’s back four.

Spurs already planning for life after Romero

Tottenham’s refusal to deal with Arsenal is not born from desperation to cling to their captain at all costs. They have already moved aggressively to reshape their defence.

Jan Paul van Hecke has arrived from Brighton in a £52m deal, a statement signing for the heart of the back line. Marcos Senesi has joined on a free from Bournemouth, adding depth and Premier League experience on the left side.

Those moves mean Spurs can contemplate Romero’s exit without flinching. They have covered the position, added competition, and bought themselves leverage in negotiations with clubs abroad.

De Zerbi keeps Romero in his plans – for now

Publicly, Roberto De Zerbi is treating Romero as part of his squad until the moment a contract elsewhere is signed.

The Tottenham head coach revealed this week that he remains in direct contact with his captain.

“I texted with Cuti yesterday to make a plan for when he comes back to London but not for the transfer market,” De Zerbi said. “That’s not my job. I know there are many solutions in the transfer market.”

It was a neat line. Romero’s future is not his department, but his return to London is. De Zerbi prepares training sessions with the defender in mind, even as executives handle the offers landing on their desks.

Romero is due back in the capital shortly. By the time the window shuts, he is expected to have clarity: Inter, Atletico Madrid, or a late twist from another European contender.

One thing is already settled. Whatever happens next, he will not be wearing red in north London.
